Cancer Services
The Future at SWBH
Vision
To provide comprehensive and state of the art
surgical and medical cancer services to the people
of Sandwell, West Birmingham and the wider Black
Country as locally as possible - through a number
of strategic service and academic partnerships
within the Black Country Alliance, regional cancer
centres and local universities
Strategic Objective
By April 2017 the majority of Surgical, Medical
and Clinical Oncology for the population served
by the Black Country Alliance will be provided
by the three partners of the alliance.
Core Principles
• Cancer is a long term condition - we support patients living with cancer
throughout their whole cancer journey
• Common cancers should be treated locally
• Local cancer units within the BCA should build on their strengths for less
common cancers for example:
• Gynae-oncology at SWBH
• Stem Cell Transplantation at DGFT
• Research is integral to the provision of cancer care - cancer medicine is
evidence creating medicine
• All patients of the BCA should have access to the very latest treatments
Core Principles
• Providing a local service means building our own comprehensive multidisciplinary team
• Surgical, Medical and Clinical Oncologists
• CNS, AOS and CUP nurses
• Pharmacy Practitioners
• End of Life
• Research Nurses & Fellows
• Providing care across the Cancer Continuum
Core Principles
• Tertiary Care where it adds value
• Rare cancers
• Neuro, HPB, H&N
• Radiotherapy
• Research collaboration
• Multiple Partnerships to de-risk service continuity
• The BCA serves a population of >1 million
• This gives a critical mass that allows for the comprehensive provision of
• Sub-specialist medical & clinical oncology care
• A range of excellent surgical oncology services
• A 7 Day Acute oncology service
• Future Investment in infrastructure
• Linear Accelerators
• Surgical Robotics

Patients at the Heart of
the Service
• By 2017 - the vast majority of cancer services will be provided
by us from our premises - even more than currently
• We will have built an expert high quality multi-disciplinary team
in whom patients can trust
• Where care by necessity is provided at other trusts (e.g. rare
cancer surgery, radiotherapy) - we will support patients with
travel arrangements
• We will be part of a network of providers working together in the
interests of patients
• Delivering the best possible cancer care
