JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Purpose:
Reporting directly to the Radiography Services Manager the position of Clinical
Specialist Radiographer (Mammography) has responsibility to lead, guide and
supervise Radiographic staff and to successfully manage service delivery on a day to
day basis. Ability to manage in a rapidly changing environment and willingness to
undertake such additional duties as may be assigned from time to time are essential.
The Breast Health Unit at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH) is a
multidisciplinary unit. In addition to Radiography duties the Clinical Specialist will
liaise with the Surgical and other disciplines to assist in planning and developing a
quality professional service to the patient cohort.
The Clinical Specialist Radiographer is directly responsible for the service provision
of 2 DR Mammography Units and 2 mobile Theatre Units for breast specimen
imaging. In addition there is a liaison role with the service provided by 2
Mammography Ultrasound Units and the MRI Mammography Service Unit.
Maintenance and development of the close link between the Breast Health unit and
Breast Check is an integral part of this post. This link is strengthened by the National
Training Centre which has been set up at the MMUH site.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
a) Develop and provide a quality Mammography service to the Breast Health
Unit.
b) Undertake, as team leader, primary responsibility on a day-to-day basis for
the Breast Health Unit Mammography service and the effective utilization of
all resources allocated.
c) Be accountable for the quality of the service provided, including customer
service and technical aspects
d) To liaise with the Breast Health Management group and other disciplines by
attending clinical, management and planning meetings, engaging in written
and verbal recording and reporting.
e) To be accountable for the Radiography Service Provision within the Breast
Health Unit by reviewing and prioritising mammography referrals.
f)
Develop and implement operational policies, protocols and guidelines to
ensure optimum utilisation of resources and systematic audit of such usage.

g) To identify all risk areas and evaluate and report to appropriate personnel in
line with MMUH polices.
Organisational Relationships
a) Liaise and communicate effectively with multi-disciplinary team members
within the Breast Health Unit and the Division of Radiology.
b) Effectively communicate with the Radiography Services Manager and advice
on significant changes in referral patterns.
c) Effectively communicate with all members of the Breast Health Unit in
assisting the unit to achieve targets and developments.
d) Undertake team building and assume responsibility for supervision and
training of Radiography Staff.
e) To notify the Radiography Services Manager of sick leave in accordance with
hospital policy

To maintain an environment conducive to learning and development.
g) Membership of the National Training Centre for Mammography.
Clinical Responsibility
a) Deliver quality, specialist services to all referrals within Breast Health Unit.
b) Maintain up to date knowledge of clinical, technical and radiographic
developments in relation to Mammography and promote awareness of any
new developments.
c) Ensure that best practices are implemented and maintained. Further training
opportunities will be available where required.
d) To maintain personal professional skills required for the specialist area and to
act as a resource for all other members of staff.
e) Ensure positive representation of the Mammography Service at all times.
f)
Be responsible for practice education of Undergraduate and Postgraduate
Radiography students.
g) Undertake and participate in clinical audit as required.

h) To submit monthly Statistics in accordance with departmental requests and
HSE Metrics.
i)
Undertake the development of protocols and pathways for select patient
conditions.
j)
Participate in the development of Policies and Procedures. Ensure
documentation of all policies and procedures on MMUH Q Pulse document
control system.
k) To be responsible for the care and maintenance of equipment and other such
duties as assigned by the Radiography Service Manager.
l)
Maintain accurate records of equipment service (Rad Asset data base
management), maintenance, malfunction, downtime and performance as
required and co-ordinate preventative maintenance schedules in accordance
with clinical demand.
m) Ensure PACS/RIS system is used effectively and appropriately matches
workflow in department.
n) To ensure that an efficient system of stock control is maintained.
Managerial Responsibilities
(a) Be responsible for daily administration duties and overall management of
workload.
(b) To be responsible for accurate documentation of departmental policy &
procedures and maintain up-to-date records.
(c) Attend and participate in in-service training programmes.
(d) Contribute to the preparation of plans for the service- monitor and report on
their implementation. Implement and maintain accurate information systems
for clinical data in accordance with hospital standards.
(e) Advise on equipment selection, purchase, replacement and upgrading.
(f) To engage in Research projects as appropriate or required.
(g) Assist with performance management for Staff Grade Radiography staff.
(h) Contribute to financial planning and ensure that appropriate budgetary control
procedures are implemented.
(i) Participate as required in human resource planning, recruitment and selection
of staff.

(j) Adhere to Health and Safety regulations within the workplace at all times.
Promote and maintain a safe environment for staff and patients. Assist in the
development and implementation of risk management and health and safety
strategies in association with appropriate personnel.
(k) Develop and maintain a training function as may be required in relation to
qualified staff and/or trainees and students. Supervise and assess all training
as required.
(l) Investigate and take appropriate action in accordance with hospital policy in
relation to complaints, accidents and incidents.
(m) Ensure that all hospital policies and relevant legislation on radiation safety is
understood by staff and complied with.
(n) Be responsible for control of infection within the Department.

Qualifications
ESSENTIAL
A Qualification recognised by the
Department of Health & Children,
(a) Bachelor of Science (Honours)
Diagnostic Radiography.
DESIRABLE
A relevant Management
qualification is an
advantage.

(b) A Diploma from a College of
Radiographers.
and
A recognised Postgraduate qualification
in Mammography/Breast Imaging.
A recognised qualification at least
equivalent to (a) or (b) and (c)
Attain validation from Irish Institute of
Radiographers and Radiation
Therapists (IIRRT).

Experience
A minimum of at least 6 years post Experience working with
qualification experience
PACS/RIS systems is
desirable.
Experience in the clinical area and the
Acute Hospital setting is essential with Experience working with

Clinical Knowledge
A high level of clinical knowledge is
essential including knowledge of
Interventional Mammography
procedures also the ability to interpret
Radiological findings on mammography
ultrasound imaging to inform best
practise Mammography technique.
It is desirable that all
external candidates

addition, will organise service delivery

daily basis.

Circumstances
This post is remunerated as per HSEEA salary scales.
Post is full time in Breast Health Unit –
35 hours per week.
There is no commitment required to
general on call rota, flexibility in working
hours between 8am – 8pm will be
introduced in line with completion of
current national negotiations.

Validation of non-national Radiographic Qualifications - Under the EU Directive 2005/36, the
Department of Health is the Competent Authority responsible for the validation of non-national
radiographic qualifications (diagnostic radiography and radiation therapy). The IIRRT, as the Designated
Authority, provides advice to the Department of Health with regard to equivalence of non-national
radiographic qualifications. However, the IIRRT does not deal directly with Applicants for validation.
