KENT MEDICAL PHYSICS PARTNERSHIP

RADIOTHERAPY PHYSICS GROUP

HEALTHCARE SCIENCE PRACTITIONER (RADIOTHERAPY PHYSICS) – BAND 5

Kent Oncology Centre provides specialist cancer services for the whole of Kent and parts of East Sussex through its centres in Maidstone and Canterbury.

The centre has nine linear accelerators across the two sites, including four Varian linacs enabled to deliver

RapidArc IMRT with OBI capability. As part of an on-going replacement program, we are currently replacing one of the linacs at Canterbury with a Varian TrueBeam. In addition to the Varian linacs there are HDR micro-Selectron and I 125 -Seed Prostate Brachytherapy facilities at Maidstone. Both sites have a dedicated CT-Simulator. Treatment planning is undertaken on Pinnacle, Eclipse, ProSoma, Oncentra and Variseed and the clinical service is supported by an ARIA network across the two sites. RapidArc IMRT and IGRT are in routine use for a range of clinical sites and in development for others. New areas of development are adaptive planning and 4DCT. The Centre participates in a number of clinical trials.

KOC has a full-time permanent position for a Healthcare Science Practitioner (Radiotherapy Physics) to join our dedicated team of Physicists, Radiographers and Technicians.

Ideally we require someone with either a BSc Honours Degree in Healthcare Science (Radiotherapy Physics) or a

Graduate Diploma in Healthcare Science (Radiotherapy Physics). Applications will also be considered from persons with a particular interest in radiotherapy physics who have a BSc Honours Degree in Physics, Applied

Physics or a relevant subject. Full on the job training will be given but it should be understood this is not a training post.

The post will be based at Maidstone Hospital. To fulfill the needs of the service appointees will sometimes be required to work on sites other than their base. The post will require some out of hours working.

In radiotherapy physics the role of a Healthcare Science Practitioner will include

 patient contact tasks such as the fabrication of localisation and shielding devices for individual patients

 patient oriented tasks such as the checking of three dimensional treatment plans for individual patients,

 machine-related tasks such as accurate and precise quality control checks and data measurements on a range of equipment producing ionizing radiation

 administrative tasks such as the maintenance of Quality Records..

Come and join a young and enthusiastic team of radiotherapy physicists, technologists and pre-treatment radiographers in Kent. We offer the successful candidate flexible working hours and continuous professional development within a friendly, sociable department. The department at Maidstone is above ground and is light, airy and spacious with a courtyard garden. The Canterbury department has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment, providing the radiotherapy physics team with improved space and facilities.

Both hospitals have a day nursery and staff car parking facilities. The county town of Maidstone and the university city of Canterbury offer beautiful river scenery, historic buildings and excellent shopping facilities, leisure centres, restaurants and nightlife together with good schools. Both Maidstone and Canterbury are within close proximity to the S.E coast, London and the Channel Tunnel.

The medical physics departments at Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust and East Kent Hospitals University

NHS Foundation Trust recently formed the Kent Medical Physics Partnership, creating one of the largest medical physics organisations in the UK. As a member of the Partnership you will work in collaboration with colleagues across Kent to develop and improve the services that we provide to our users.
