JOB DESCRIPTION:

JOB SUMMARY:
The Haemodialysis Patient Social Worker Officer will act within the multidisciplinary
team, liaising between nursing staff, The Medical Team and patients, collating
relevant patient information which will then be utilised to assist the medical staff and
nursing staff in the process of taking care of all renal patients. He/She will also ensure
that any changes arising from the interviews will be discussed with the patients and
will be reported to the Nurse in Charge of the Renal Unit allowing open lines of
communication to be maintained within the department. He/She will be responsible
for translating verbal and written forms of communication from Arabic to English and
vice versa as required by staff and patients.
2.0
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
2.1
Daily Review of Patients as necessary:
2.1.1
Accountable to the Renal Unit Head Nurse and will liaise with the
Head Nurse regularly as required to discuss issues raised by the
ongoing review of renal patients.
2.1.2
Responsible for reviewing patients and the family of patients who do
not come for dialysis, who refuse treatment , who have issues with
their treatment or care givers, who have financial problems, who show
signs and symptoms of depression or other psychiatric disorders.
He/She will advise to refer patients to the appropriate medical
disciplines as deemed necessary.
2.1.3
Discuss the patient’s progress with the Nurse In-Charge of the various
departments.
2.1.4
Report all changes made by the Nephrologists (of patients’ treatment
regimes, dialysis prescription, to the Nurse in Charge of the unit via
verbal and written communication).

2.1.5
After discussion with the Nurse In-Charge of Renal Unit, the Patient’s
Social Worker Officer will then report any changes in treatment regime
to the patients.
2.1.6
Prepare and distribute leaflets to patients and families on all aspects of
renal health education and social relief available in the Kingdom of
Saudi Arabia.
2.1.7
Give support to the families and talk with patients and/or families
about any matters of concern that may arise.
2.1.8
Ensure that any issues or concerns raised by the patients are also
reported Nurse in Charge of the unit to ensure sound communication is
maintained within the multidisciplinary team.
2.1.9
Also liaise with the department of Patient Affairs and the Department
of Psychiatry weekly to ensure that all patient’s needs are being dealt
with appropriately.
2.1.10 Works flex time in order to see and assist patients and their families in
the morning, afternoon and evening.
2.1.11 Prepare questionnaires in Arabic regarding patient/family satisfaction.
Collate the patient questionnaires and analyze the findings
appropriately for action to be taken by the Physician/Nursing Staff.
2.1.12 Must promptly report complaints and incidences in accordance with
hospital policy.
2.1.13 Attend mandatory lectures, i.e. Fire & Safety according to hospital
policy.
2.1.14 Participate in Professional Development Programmes as necessary.
2.1.15 Document all issues discussed or dealt with in the Clinical Notes of the
patient.

2.1.16 Submit monthly reports of patients seen to the Head Nurse of the Renal
Unit.
2.1.17 Have all documentation used available to show what he/she is doing.
2.1.18 Help the Renal Unit Patient Educator whenever necessary.
3.0
HOURS OF WORK:
3.1 48 hours per week for Registered Nurses.
3.2 140 hours per month for MSD Technicians
4.0
REQUIREMENTS:
4.1 At least five years experience as a Dialysis Technician / Renal Nurse.
4.2 Current certificate of Proficiency in the Administration of Medicines (If not RN).
4.3 Excellent communication skills.
4.4 Sound knowledge base of Renal Replacement Therapies.
4.5 Sound knowledge base of Renal Specific Drug Therapies, diet, fluid restrictions.
4.6 Must be fluent in both written and spoken Arabic & English.
4.7 Must be of high ethical merits, safeguard confidentiality.
4.8 Must be able to work under pressure and handle stressful situations diligently.
He/She must be pleasant with patients and the public; avoid arguments.
4.9 Ideally, she/he should be a Saudi National so that he/she can offer advise on a
healthy lifestyle, in compliance with local culture and beliefs.

5.0
TERMS AND CONDITIONS:
5.1 He/She will undergo a 3 month probation period. The candidate will be assessed
by the Head of Patients Affairs Department, the Head Nurse of the Renal Unit
and the Unit Manager after the initial 3 months. He/She will meet with the above
mentioned managers once a week to discuss his/her progress.
