No: Date of Issue: Issue: Page: Renal Unit NP/RD/J 006 11.01.2012 3 1 of 4 JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE: Renal Unit Patient Educator RESPONSIBLE FOR: See Job Summary ACCOUNTABLE TO: Renal Unit Head Nurse & Head of Nephrology & Dialysis JOB DESCRIPTION: 1.0 JOB SUMMARY: The Haemodialysis Patient Educator will act within the multidisciplinary team, liaising between nursing staff, the Medical Team and patients, collating relevant patient information which will then be utilised to assist the Medical Staff and Nursing Staff in the process of taking care of all renal patients. He/She will ensure that any changes arising from the education done will be discussed with the patients and will be reported to the Nurse in Charge of the renal unit, allowing open lines of communication within the department. He/She will be responsible for translating verbal and written forms of communication from Arabic to English and vice versa as required by staff and patients. 2.0 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 2.1 Daily Review of Patients as necessary: 2.1.1 He/She will be accountable to the Renal Unit Head Nurse and will liaise with the Head Nurse regularly as required to discuss issues raised by the ongoing education of renal patients. 2.1.2 He/She will be responsible for reviewing patients and the family of patients who have issues with their treatment or care givers. Most of the time, these issues can be resolved by educating the patient and their families. He/She will provide one to one health care education in the haemodialysis unit and the nephrology clinics and will have group health education sessions when necessary. 2.1.3 He/She will assess the specific Health Education and care needs of the patients and provide Health Education, advises and care according to the needs of the patients. 2.1.4 He/She will prepare and distribute leaflets to patients and families on all aspects of Renal Health Education. 2.1.5 He/She will give support to the families and talk with patients and/or families about any matters of concern that may arise. No: Date of Issue: Issue: Page: NP/RD/J 006 11.01.2012 3 2 of 4 Renal Unit Patient Educator JOB DESCRIPTION: (Cont’d.) 2.1.6 He/She will discuss the patients’ progress in regards to education with the Nurse in Charge and at the monthly patient education meeting. 2.1.7 He/She will educate the patient and the family about any changes made in the patients’ treatment regimes and dialysis prescription. 2.1.8 He/She will redirect patients who choose PD or Transplantation as the first choice of treatment to the relevant staff members. 2.1.9 He/She will provide education to patients in the renal transplant unit and in the acute dialysis unit. 2.1.10 He/She will ensure that any issues or concerns raised by the patients are reported to the Nurse in Charge of the unit to ensure sound communication is maintained within the multidisciplinary team. 2.1.11 He/She will also liaise with the department of Patient Affairs, the Department of Preventive Medicine, the Dietary Department and the Department of Education weekly to ensure that all patients learning needs are being dealt with appropriately. 2.1.12 He/She will work flex time in order to see and assist patients and there families in the morning, afternoon and evening shifts. 2.1.13 He/She will prepare questionnaires in Arabic regarding patient/family satisfaction. He/She will collate the patient questionnaires and analyze the findings appropriately for action to be taken by the physician/nursing staff. 2.1.14 He/She must promptly report complaints and incidences in accordance with hospital policy. 2.1.15 He/She will attend mandatory lectures, i.e. Fire & Safety according to hospital policy. 2.1.16 He/She will participate in Professional Development Programmes as necessary as necessary. No: Date of Issue: Issue: Page: Renal Unit JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE: NP/RD/J 006 11.01.2012 3 3 of 4 Renal Unit Patient Educator JOB DESCRIPTION: (Cont’d.) 2.1.17 He/She will document all teaching done in the clinical notes of the patient. 2.1.18 He/She will submit monthly statistics of topics taught to the head nurse of the Renal Unit. 2.1.19 He/She will have all education documentation used available to show what he/she is doing. 2.1.20 He/She will help the social worker liaison officer whenever necessary. 3.0 HOURS OF WORK: 3.1 48 hours per week for Registered Nurses 3.2 140 hours per month for MSD Technicians 4.0 REQUIREMENTS: 4.1 At least five years experience as a Dialysis Technician / Renal Unit. 4.2 Excellent communication skills. 4.3 Sound knowledge base of renal replacement therapies. 4.4 Must be fluent in both written and spoken Arabic & English. 4.5 Must be of high ethical merits, safeguard confidentiality. 4.6 Must be able to work under pressure and handle stressful situations diligently. He/She must be pleasant with patients and the public; avoid arguments. 4.7 Ideally, she/he should be a Saudi National so that he/she can offer advise on a healthy lifestyle, in compliance with local culture and beliefs. The candidate will be assessed by the Head Nurse of the Renal Unit after the initial 3 months. He/She will meet with the above mentioned managers once a week to discuss his/her progress. N.B.
