POLICY
Postgraduate Year One Pharmacy Residency Program Requirements for Successful Program
Completion.
PURPOSE
This publication establishes the requirements for successful completion of the postgraduate year
one pharmacy residency program. All individual and program requirements must be met to
obtain residency program certification at the conclusion of the residency year. The resident
reports to and is supervised by the rotation preceptor and the residency director, and decisions as
to completion of residency program requirements lie with the preceptor and/or the residency
director.
RESIDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
The resident is expected to abide by all policies of the residency program, pharmacy department,
and health system.
The resident must become a licensed pharmacist in the state of Alabama.
The resident is expected to develop a “resident’s notebook” containing copies of all projects and
paperwork done throughout the residency year and printouts of documented clinical
interventions. Electronic copies should also be maintained in a designated pharmacy folder.
The resident is expected to maintain active membership in the American Society of HealthSystem Pharmacists and the Alabama Society of Health-System Pharmacists (AlSHP) and attend
at least 50% of local AlSHP meetings.
The resident is expected to attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, either the Southeastern
Residency Conference or the Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group Residency Showcase, and up
to four residency showcases. Residents may attend other professional meetings at the discretion
of their preceptor and the residency director if the residency schedule permits.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
The resident is expected to achieve all of the ASHP required educational outcomes and goals for
PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Programs and the elective goals selected by the Children’s Hospital
residency program by the end of the residency year. The resident must also achieve 85% of the
required and elective objectives under each educational goal in order to complete the residency
program. The resident must have received a “satisfactory progress” rating on the remaining 15%
of the required and elective objectives.

the conclusion of each rotation (or quarterly, for longitudinal rotations) and

subsequent preceptors can assess the resident’s progress
 documenting all clinical interventions during the rotation
 preparing an evaluation of the rotation and preceptor with recommendations for
