This unit standard is designed for people working or intending
to work as a coating inspector.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare a
plan for coating inspection, verify preparation for coating
application, and verify inspection requirements; verify the types
of coating and surface conditions required; verify the
preparation and application conditions for protective coatings;
and inspect and report on the coating.

Critical health and
safety prerequisites
This unit standard is restricted for safety reasons to entry by
people who currently hold Coating Inspector certification
recognised by the Australasian Corrosion Association or the
New Zealand Certification Board for Inspection Personnel as
stated in AS/NZS 2312:2002: Guide to the protection of
structural steel against atmospheric corrosion by the use of
protective coatings (section 11.2a).
Explanatory notes

Definitions
Inspection and Test Plan (ITP) refers to the documented procedures for the
inspection and verification of coatings and coated surfaces;
Plan is the procedures developed to enable the inspection to be carried out in a
logical and safe manner;
Specifications include customer requirements.

All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice (or documented worksite
safety procedures where these exceed code regulatory requirements) for safety of
personnel, product, and worksite, and must meet the obligations required under
current legislation.

AS/NZS 2312:2002 Guide to the protection of structural steel against atmospheric
corrosion by the use of protective coatings;
Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996;
Local Government Consent requirements.

This unit standard covers new work, modifications, and repairs.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Prepare a plan for coating inspection, verify preparation for coating application, and verify
inspection requirements.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Surface coating requirements are described in accordance with AS/NZS
2312:2002.

A plan is prepared for coating inspection requirements in accordance with the
customer, specifications, and the ITP.
1.3
Preparation, coating application, and inspection requirements are verified in
accordance with the specifications.

3.1
Safety requirements during the preparation and application of coating are
verified as complying with the ITP.

Coating preparation and application is verified as complying with the
specifications.

report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading

Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and

applies to those standards.
