Fetal Pig: Structures you will be expected to be able to identify
Head and Throat: parotid gland, submaxillary gland
Mouth Cavity and Pharynx: hard palate, soft palate, esophagus, larynx, epiglottis, glottis,
thymus, trachea, thyroid gland
Abdominal cavity: umbilical vein, body wall, diaphragm, parietal and visceral peritoneum,
mesenteries, liver, gall bladder, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, spleen, umbilical
arteries, umbilical vein, allantoic bladder (=urinary bladder), kidneys
Thoracic Cavity and Neck: pleura, pleural cavity, pericardium
Digestive Tract: esophagus, stomach, rugae, pyloric valve, small intestine, duodenum, jejunum,
ileum, villi, large intestine, colon, rectum, anus, cecum, liver, gall, bladder, common bile
duct, pancreas
Urogenital system: urinary bladder, urethra, kidneys, ureter, adrenal gland, inguinal canal,
urethra, vas deferens, penis, testis; ovaries, uterus (horns), vagina, oviduct (=fallopian
tube)
Circulatory System: heart- right and left atria, right and left ventricles, superior and inferior
vena cavae, pulmonary trunk (artery) and veins, aorta, coronary arteries.
General Plan of Circulation
Veins of Head Shoulders and Forelimbs: internal jugular vein, external jugular vein, precava
vein, hemiazygous vein
Arteries of Head Shoulders and Forelimbs: aorta, brachiocephalic trunk, left subclavian artery,
carotid trunk, right subclavian artery, axillary artery, brachial artery, radial and ulnar
arteries.
Pulmonary Circulation (Fetal Shortcuts, and changes in circulation at birth): know it and the
terms: pulmonary trunk and arteries, foramen ovale, ductus arteriosus, ductus venosus
Postcaval Venous Circulation: postcava (not injected so just locate it)
Hepatic Portal system
Arteries of the Trunk and Hind Limbs: aorta, celiac artery, anterior mesenteric artery, renal a.,
spermatic or ovarian a., posterior mesenteric a. external and internal iliac arteries femoral
artery, umbilical arteries
Structure of the Heart: atria, ventricles, coronary artery, pulmonary trunk, aorta, precava
and postcava, pulmonary veins, tricuspid, and bicuspid valves, semilunar valves.
