MEET THE FLAMES JUSTA WALL, junior next year from Aurora, Nebraska. What have you learned since coming to CSM? Hardwork and dedication really pays off. Being on the sidelines is just as important as being on the floor and when asked to step in, giving it a 110% all the time. What would be a nice accomplishment for you next season? Try to bring out the best in myself and who ever is around me and as a player and as a person. Ace Report What is your favorite thing to do after a match? Sleep and eat. Like to eat bananas, grapes, green apples, and chicken alfredo at Applebee's and Olive Garden. MANDY KREIKEMEIER, redshirt freshman next year from West Point, Nebraska What was something you learned the most last season? Last season was probably one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. Sitting out my freshman year in college was both a heartbreaker and an eye-opener for me. Something I learned that I thought was very important from last season would probably be the fact that college volleyball is a whole different game than in high school. College is more about strategy and positioning and 'volleyball smartness', unlike high school where I was just taught to hit the ball as hard as I could. I never learned how to tip to the deep corners, actually come to think of it, I never tipped at all in high school--why pass up a hit to tip? By being able to watch each and every game from the sidelines, I got the chance to see first-hand exactly what I was expected to do when I come back. Seeing the game helped me realize what I needed to work on and what I needed to change before I got the chance to play with my injury. I will never take for granted again the playing time I get because I went nuts not being able to play volleyball for about 9 months. What was one feeling that kept you motivated this past season despite your injury? The team was the greatest supporter of me first of all, but one of my feelings that kept me motivated was my drive to play. I live for sports, and not being able to play this last season caused me to be a stronger person. Without playing volleyball for that long, I had my days where I just wanted to give up and let it go. But, then I had that little voice in the back of my head telling me that I've worked this hard all throughout high school to get where I'm at now, why give up now when a little obstacle gets in the way? Throughout all my disappointments this season with my injury, my huge support came from my teammates--they kept me sane and helped me get to where I am right now--on my way to playing once again and with them. What will be the first thing you want to accomplish when you step on the court? When I step on the court, the first thing I want to change is my attitude about the game. I've always been one to be hard on myself and to expect the best out of myself all the time. So, my ultimate goal is to be happy while playing and keep a good attitude. Sports are so much more fun when there are smiles passed from one teammate to another. I expect to change my attitude with, of course, the help of my dependable teammates who have always been there for me this past year. CHRISTI HUIGENS, senior next year from Sioux City, IA What would you tell a high school player about the CSM Volleyball Program? If I was to talk to a high school player about our volleyball program, the first thing I would tell her about is the amazing unity we have between the players. Success doesn't come without teamwork, and teamwork doesn't come without unity. The reason we are successful is because we're all on the same page, working toward the same goal while encouraging each to do their best and accepting nothing less. We have a team that works their hardest on and off the court to reach goals that we have set, and we'll do anything it takes to accomplish them. What do you do to prepare you for a match? I prepare for a match by getting into the mind set of competing and striving for a victory. I help my teammates by encouraging 110% effort throughout the match and playing until the last point. What is something you will remember about your experience here 5 years from now? The best thing about being a part of this CSM volleyball team is the friendships that I have developed with each of the girls and coaches. They have all impacted my life in one way or another that will never be forgotten. LET US KNOW WHO TO SEND THIS TO! Email tsiedlik@csm.edu to add any future fans!
