Frequently Asked Questions about the FE Exam and Review
Course
Exam Application Process
Who is eligible to take the FE exam at CSM?
CSM senior students who are within one calendar year of their graduation (NOTE: this
requirement is different from senior status as determined by the registrar), regardless of total
credits earned to date, are eligible to take the FE exam on the CSM campus as long as they 1)
complete the state-issued application and submit it to the Engineering Division office by the
deadline posted at www.mines.edu/fs_home/knelson/EIT_INFO.html and 2) complete the online exam application at www.els-examreg.org/state_info.php?state=Colorado.For all others, the
following website contains the exam locations: www.dora.state.co.us/aes/index.htm
Where is the Colorado FE exam application form available?
The FE exam application form is available at the following website, with a link to the Student
Engineer Intern Application form and Student Engineer Intern Exam Info Notice currently
located in the lower left corner:
www.dora.state.co.us/aes/index.htm
Where is the NCEES/ELSES exam application form?
The NCEES/ELSES form is an online application. The site for students in Colorado is located at
www.els-examreg.org/state_info.php?state=Colorado.
Why are there two application forms?
The State Board of Colorado must approve your eligibility to sit for the exam. Your eligibility is
checked via the CO FE student application form, which is submitted to the State Board through
CSM. CSM certify that you are a student before we submit the form to the state. The exam is
administered by NCEES/ELSES under contract from the Colorado State Board. They require
that you register separately from the state using their online application form. They will
administer the printing, mailing, proctoring, grading and reporting of exam results.
When is the exam application deadline?
For current CSM senior students, the exam application deadline is announced on the review
course notice, which is available at www.mines.edu/fs_home/knelson/EIT_INFO.html. For all
others, including CSM graduate students, the deadline for application is January 1 of the current
year for the April exam, and July 1 of the current year for the October exam.
What type of transcript do I need to include with my application?

An unofficial transcript, such as one downloaded and printed from Trailhead, is sufficient for the
FE exam application.
If I take the FE exam and fail it, do I need to re-apply and pay another exam fee to take it
again?
Yes, another application must be submitted in order to take the exam, and the NCEES/ELSES
examination fee must be paid again, but the State Board will advise as to whether their fee is also
payable a second time. Contact the State Board for advisement:

Yes, money orders can be accepted in lieu of checks.
Is there a limit to the number of times that an engineer takes the FE exam?
There is no limit on the number of times that an engineer takes the FE exam, as long as they reapply for the exam before the applicable deadline and pay the required fees for each exam that
they take.
FE Review Course at CSM
Do I need to register to take the review course?
Registration is not necessary to take any review session. The sessions are generally held at 7 pm
on Tuesday evenings in CTLM Room 102, which seats approximately 150.
Can a review session “replace” a semester long course in content?
Because each review session is held for a different subject and lasts for no longer than two hours,
it is not possible to provide complete instruction in that subject. It is a review, not a replacement
for a particular course.
Does each review session include handout materials?
Handout materials, where used by a review session instructor, are available at
www.mines.edu/fs_home/knelson/EIT_INFO.html.
When is the CSM review course held?

No, the review course is not required, but is encouraged, especially if any subject covered by the
exam has not been studied recently.
Does the review course include the application for the FE exam?
No, the application process has no connection with the administration of the review course.
What is the cost of the review course?
The review course is offered at no charge to current CSM seniors (those within one year of
graduation) and most current graduate students. For all others, the cost is $250, by check,
payable to CSM and submitted at the first review session.
