MIRACOSTA COLLEGE CLASS TITLE: TECHNICAL WRITER BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Vice President, Instructional Services assist and support the development and maintenance of division written materials and publications; provide specialized academic support to faculty members. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: 1. Participate in curriculum development and modification by working directly with faculty, deans, and others to assist in writing high quality course, certificate, and program descriptions. (E) 2. Review, check, and correct course outlines, class schedules, and catalogs to ensure proper grammar usage; verify data for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established procedures. (E) 3. Participate as a member of the Technical Review Committee; negotiate the successful resolution of problems as they relate to curriculum development. (E) 4. Review and edit all instructional publications such as catalogs, class schedules, newsletters, brochures, and flyers for style, grammar and content as needed; participate in the planning and design of instructional publications. (E) 5. Evaluate instructional publications, commenting on content, technique, and areas of needed improvement; inform responsible parties and assist with any necessary revisions. (E) 6. Attend faculty meetings, participate on committees and attend conferences, classes and workshops to maintain, update, and increase knowledge and skills in field of specialty. 7. Provide writing expertise and advice to faculty, staff and administrators concerning written documents and publications; supply information on available resources to faculty and staff. Provide training to faculty members in the completion of the curriculum process. (E) 8. Compose correspondence newsletters, flyers, posters, and information articles publicizing division programs and services. 9. Perform a variety of duties independently to support flow and coordination of curriculum development; interpret and apply rules and regulations as appropriate. (E) 10. Explain, interpret, and apply with good judgment college and division policies, laws, rules, and regulations. Compose correspondence independently; communicate information in person or by telephone where judgment, common knowledge and interpretation of policies and regulations are necessary. Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Organize and assemble data and prepare reports. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent to a Masters degree in English and one year closely related work experience. EMOTIONAL EFFORT: Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving appropriate interactions and communications in person, by telephone, e-mail or correspondence with staff, faculty, administrators and others from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis. Ability to work effectively under pressure on a variety of tasks concurrently, while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities. WORKING CONDITIONS: Primarily busy, indoor office environment; subject to frequent contacts and interruptions by individuals in person or by phone; may be required to work at any district location or authorized facility during day and/or evening hours including occasional weekends on an as-needed basis.
