Paula Ravitz, John Teshima, Vicky Stergiopoulos, Robert Cooke Place: Time: No. of Residents: 3 month, 6 month or 1 year rotations Description The ACME psychiatric outreach elective: focusing on CanMEDs Roles of Advocate, Collaborator, Communicator, Manager, and Medical Expert." Drs. Paula Ravitz, John Teshima, Vicky Stergiopoulos, Robert Cooke Psychiatrists have the opportunity to liaise with and work in settings where there are high and complex service demands, both locally and in northern underserviced communities. We are often looked to on teams to take leadership, to provide expert opinions as consultants and to build capacity through in-service education or case conferences. This is especially true in the context of outreach or community-based work. This elective will foster expertise in senior residents as consultants through outreach work done both through the Northern Psychiatric Outreach Program at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (NPOP-C) & locally in one of three streams. A minimum of 10 clinical days of NPOP-C visits/6 month period to northern Ontario settings in combination with local outreach will be arranged. The resident will also be exposed to the use of videoconferencing technology for the provision of both telemedicine clinical consultation and education to remote, rural sites. Through NPOP-C visits, informal and formal educational activities will be encouraged. In this context, the CanMEDs roles of medical expert, collaborator, advocate, manager and educator will be fostered. Residents can elect to do 3 month, 6 month or 1 year rotations in this elective. Provincial outreach visits will be done in combination with 1 of 3 differing Toronto based electives as listed below. Provincial outreach and Inner City Health Associates: This stream of the elective will combine UTPOP mentored visits to northern, underserviced communities with a placement in the Inner City Health Associates Programme at St Michael’s Hospital who provides services to marginalized or high need populations, for example in shelters, with inner city primary care services, drop-in centres, or with street outreach teams. Sinai Hospital: Please note that the 3 month option does not apply to this rotation. This stream of the elective will combine NPOP-C mentored visits to northern, underserviced communities with a placement at the Mt. Sinai Hospital with a focus on developing expertise in formulation of challenging patients along with skills based shortâterm psychotherapies. Residents will have opportunity to facilitate frontline staff training in brief psychotherapy models utilizing teaching materials and lesson plans especially created for this context. Residents will be supervised by several of the outreach psychiatrists, and in Toronto, principally by Dr. Paula Ravitz.
