Vagahau Niue texts in unfamiliar contexts.

1
Definitions
Vagahau Niue refers to the authentic language of Niue. This unit standard involves
written Vagahau Niue;
Contexts refer to communicative situations, topics and settings appropriate to written
Vagahau Niue;
Unfamiliar refers to topics and settings that are outside the learner’s normal personal
experience
Complex refers to a wider range of vocabulary and tenses in sentences containing
one or more dependent clauses, and more complicated grammatical structures;
Texts refer to coherent and identifiable pieces of spoken or written communication
that may include authentic or edited texts; written texts could include dialogues,
descriptions, discussion, argument, and verse; media items such as newspaper or
magazine articles and library texts;
Infer meaning refers to spoken texts that include information that is ‘not stated’, and
can only be inferred from the facts or situations presented.
Coherent format refers to a logical order that is understandable and easily read.

This unit standard requires written extracts from two unfamiliar texts, each extract in
total at least 300 words long. The language of the texts is to be complex Vagahau
Niue.

This unit standard requires written responses in culturally authentic Vagahau Niue.
Achievement of the evidence requirements allows for minor errors in grammar and
vocabulary, and for village-based language differences.

Outcomes one and two are to be assessed twice (once for each text). These
assessments may occur on two separate occasions.

Endorsement of village language variation may be conducted by pulotu, village or
community appointed experts.
