Definitions
Vagahau Niue refers to the language of Niue. This unit standard involves both
spoken and written Vagahau Niue;
Contexts refer to communicative situations, topics and settings appropriate to
Vagahau Niue;
Familiar refers to topics and settings that are within the learner’s personal
experience;
Texts refer to coherent and identifiable pieces of spoken or written communication;
for example spoken texts include messages, instructions, announcements, and
dialogues;
Main points refer to the objective, intention or the most important ideas in spoken
texts;
Specific details refer to the smaller parts that support and expand on the main points.

Sources of texts may include but are not limited to – conversations, answer phone
messages, digital recordings.
If the recordings are not for public purposes, learners should seek the consent of
featured parties, speakers or leveki/caretakers of the taoga.

This unit standard requires two spoken texts in Vagahau Niue. Each text may be one
or more spoken extracts or passages, must be at least 200 words long, and may be
heard up to three times.

Outcomes one and two are to be assessed twice (once for each text). These
assessments may be on two separate occasions.

Responses for this unit standard may be in spoken or written culturally authentic
Vagahau Niue or English. Achievement of the evidence requirements allows for
minor errors in grammar and vocabulary, and for village-based language differences
in Vagahau Niue.
