COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will cover the different sociological perspectives as it deals with culture, family, groups, deviance, stratification, gender, family and sexual behavior. The course will provide the student with tools to understand the behavior of society through different sociological perspectives. It would also give a brief understanding on how sociologists do research to get information about a specific social group. The student will come out of the course with a better grasp of culture and its infinite variations. As a result of this knowledge we hope to have individuals aware of diversity, respectful of other peoples´ way of doing things, fully aware of their own background and heritage and with the kind of intellectual tolerance to other peoples´ ideas so needed at present. We will start with the basic explanation about sociology and the different perspectives; the ways to conduct research and the study of culture and socialization. The course will study groups and organizations and social deviance; also we will go through social classes and mobility, gender, family, marriage and at the end we will cover sexual behavior. 2. JUSTIFICATION No matter what career students have chosen, they must have a basic understanding of sociology and how society works. They need to understand how groups function and the general characteristics of culture and its variations in order to function optimally in our modern society. 3. OBJECTIVES a. GENERAL: Students will be able to explain how and why cultures are different. b. SPECIFIC Students will: Explain how different groups affect people’s lives Explain how social stratification affects a person’s viewpoints Recognize reasons for deviancy and crime 4. METHODOLOGY At the beginning of the course each student is given a copy of the syllabus so he or she can follow the daily readings. During the first week of class, each student chooses the topics that he or she will present as oral presentation assignments. In each class, after the explanation about the day’s topic is given, we proceed with an exchange of questions and answers between the students and the professor. Sometimes audio visual projections are arranged by the students at specific dates. 7.- EVALUATION 7.1 Assessment Criteria Completion of assigned readings and outlines Class Participation Research and oral presentation Written exams 7.2 Performance Markers Summarizes the effects of society on our lives.
