Sociology: Senior Elective Mr. Brown Room 529 Objective: To learn how to think critically about the world around us and to gain a basic understanding of the sociological perspective. Topics: Intro to Sociology, Culture, Social Interaction, Group dynamics, Criminal Justice System, Social Stratification, Gender issues and Family issues. Textbook: Sociology by Dr. John J. Macinois Daily Materials: Notebook/Folder, Chapter Outlines and writing utensil Non-daily Materials: Textbook, Assignments on due dates Projects/Papers: 1.) Culture Project 2.) Travel Documentary/Article Review Reaction Paper 3.) Crime Documentary/ Article Review Reaction Paper Homework: Approximately two homework assignments per chapter. Homework assignments will consist of required readings, surveys, experiments etc… Tests: Each chapter will culminate with a short answer test. Chapter Outlines/Review Guides: These will be used as your chapter notes. Each class will begin with an introduction to the day’s terms/information. You will fill in the outline as class progresses. If you miss a day it is your responsibility to update your outline. Each outline ends with a chapter review guide which you must complete. Chapter outlines and review guides will be collected on test days. You will be awarded 10 points for a completed outline and 5 points for a completed review guide. Daily Lesson Plans: Class will begin with short introductions and/or lectures based on the day’s topic. Classes will also consist of group activities, experiments, reading discussions, videos/documentaries, surveys, class research. Things to think about: 1. Never lose your curiosity! 2. Don’t be afraid to learn! 3. Seniorities is a cliché…it doesn’t exist!
