AF_COM01_ Working Situations: The selling process in a shop Guia del Professor 1. Objectives The general objective of this Learning Activity is to be able to help a customer in a shop. The activities should allow the students to have enough resources to deal with an English speaking customer as salespersons in a store. In particular: To be able to greet people entering a store To be able to respond to customer requests: sizes, measurements, colors, shapes, etc To be able to deal with different forms of payment: credit card, debit card and cash. To be able to deal with customer complaints Therefore, most of the contents will be based on oral expression activities and recreating situations that you can find as a salesperson in a store. 2. Materials and teacher’s advice I will develop the Leaning Activity (LA) in four units, which aim to achieve the objectives mentioned above: Unit 1. Greeting customers and saying goodbye. Unit 2. Answering customer questions Unit 3. Making the sale Unit 4. Dealing with customer complaints The students must learn some specific vocabulary, and will have to refresh vocabulary they already know. In particular I think the list should include: Known vocabulary: o Numbers o Colors (basic) o Alphabet (spelling) o Adjectives (big, small, dark,…) Specific vocabulary: o Clothing Sizes o Shoes sizes o Measurement units o Specific colors It is very helpful to have a shop workshop where students can simulate sales. This way they can get into the situation easily. Methodology This Learning Activity has four Units. The contents will be based on oral expressions activities and recreating situations that you can find as a salesperson in a store. The same methodology has been used to develop each unit: First of all, there is an introduction to the situation and to the main theoretical concepts they are going to work in the unit, with practical examples. The teacher will introduce the unit as well as the activities of the unit. AF_COM01_ Working Situations: The selling process in a shop / Guia del professor 2 Second, the student will have to build their own dictionary with the expressions and vocabulary that will be useful in that situation. There will be some activities that will help them to do it, like videos and articles. Third, there is a set of activities in order to put all the theory into practice: the Student will have to work in pairs in order to simulate the sales in a shop (role play). It is very important to emphasize the work in the pronunciation of the new words and sentences. As it is mentioned before, it is very helpful to have a shop workshop where students can simulate sales. This way they can get into the situation easily. Fourth, there is the “To know more” section. It will be useful for students who have a higher English acknowledgement or for those who want to study in depth. The teacher should speak slowly and should ask to the most advanced students for help when translations are needed. It is important to use always English as the vehicular language, even if some students show a low comprehension level at the beginning. This way they will start to get familiar with the pronunciation of words and will be able to finish talking themselves. 4. Assessment The assessment will take into account: The outcome produced in each unit for: o The notebook work, this is the “Building a Dictionary” activity. At the end of each unit the teacher will evaluate the outcome produced. o The role-playing activity done at the end of each unit, where students work in two in order to prepare a dialogue using the specific contents of that unit. A final role-playing activity that includes the whole selling process in a shop. As in the previous role-playing activities they should act in front of their classmates, so they can assess them and reinforce at the same time the acknowledgment. 5. Additional considerations The activities presented in this document are flexible and the teacher can choose to make all or part of the material. The activities are focused on the selling process of a clothing shop. The content can be easily adapted to any other shop, like a bookstore, or a supermarket, for example.
