AF_COM01_ Working Situations: The selling process in a shop
Guia del Professor
1. Objectives
The general objective of this Learning Activity is to be able to help a customer in a shop.
The activities should allow the students to have enough resources to deal with an English
speaking customer as salespersons in a store. In particular:




To be able to greet people entering a store
To be able to respond to customer requests: sizes, measurements, colors, shapes, etc
To be able to deal with different forms of payment: credit card, debit card and cash.
To be able to deal with customer complaints
Therefore, most of the contents will be based on oral expression activities and recreating
situations that you can find as a salesperson in a store.
2. Materials and teacher’s advice
I will develop the Leaning Activity (LA) in four units, which aim to achieve the objectives
mentioned above:




Unit 1. Greeting customers and saying goodbye.
Unit 2. Answering customer questions
Unit 3. Making the sale
Unit 4. Dealing with customer complaints
The students must learn some specific vocabulary, and will have to refresh vocabulary they
already know. In particular I think the list should include:

Known vocabulary:
o Numbers
o Colors (basic)
o Alphabet (spelling)
o Adjectives (big, small, dark,…)

Specific vocabulary:
o Clothing Sizes
o Shoes sizes
o Measurement units
o Specific colors
It is very helpful to have a shop workshop where students can simulate sales. This way they can
get into the situation easily.

It is also very helpful to work in small groups so that the teacher can listen and correct the
pronunciation of each student.
The proposed timing is the following:

3. Methodology
This Learning Activity has four Units. The contents will be based on oral expressions activities
and recreating situations that you can find as a salesperson in a store.
The same methodology has been used to develop each unit:
 First of all, there is an introduction to the situation and to the main theoretical concepts
they are going to work in the unit, with practical examples. The teacher will introduce the
unit as well as the activities of the unit.




Second, the student will have to build their own dictionary with the expressions and
vocabulary that will be useful in that situation. There will be some activities that will help
them to do it, like videos and articles.
Third, there is a set of activities in order to put all the theory into practice: the Student will
have to work in pairs in order to simulate the sales in a shop (role play). It is very
important to emphasize the work in the pronunciation of the new words and sentences.
As it is mentioned before, it is very helpful to have a shop workshop where students can
simulate sales. This way they can get into the situation easily.
Fourth, there is the “To know more” section. It will be useful for students who have a
higher English acknowledgement or for those who want to study in depth.
The teacher should speak slowly and should ask to the most advanced students for help when
translations are needed. It is important to use always English as the vehicular language, even if
some students show a low comprehension level at the beginning. This way they will start to get
familiar with the pronunciation of words and will be able to finish talking themselves.
4. Assessment
The assessment will take into account:
 The outcome produced in each unit for:
o The notebook work, this is the “Building a Dictionary” activity. At the end of
each unit the teacher will evaluate the outcome produced.
o The role-playing activity done at the end of each unit, where students work in
two in order to prepare a dialogue using the specific contents of that unit.

A final role-playing activity that includes the whole selling process in a shop. As in the
previous role-playing activities they should act in front of their classmates, so they can
assess them and reinforce at the same time the acknowledgment.
5. Additional considerations


The activities presented in this document are flexible and the teacher can choose to
make all or part of the material.
The activities are focused on the selling process of a clothing shop. The content can
be easily adapted to any other shop, like a bookstore, or a supermarket, for example.
This can be also an extension of the contents if desired.
