Greg Crew: gregcrew@ozemail.com.au Congratulations to our new members, Bros. Ryan Davis, Sean O’Callaghan, David Manallack, Andrew Burman, and Shane Webster In a record-breaking year, we have welcomed 8 new initiates. Ryan (son of our Senior Warden, Mark), Sean and David were initiated at our March meeting, while Andrew and Shane joined us in April. The following profiles give an introduction to them: Ryan Davis is a young RMIT University graduate and a current Master of Property student at The University of Melbourne. He is passionate about property development and hopes to develop a successful career in the property industry. Ryan enjoys a healthy lifestyle, partaking in many hours of sport and physical activity with a particular focus on long distance running. He likes to participate in running events that support charities and allow for a competitive forum for personal and physical development. Ryan looks forward to meeting socially with friends, sharing memories and having a good time. However, he also likes to create new friendships, while discovering and learning about other people’s various and different walks of life. Ryan is very excited about the Freemasonry journey and hopes to honour the name, the Freemason community and the individuals involved. He looks forward to contributing and supporting the great causes associated with the Freemason mission. Sean and Ryan, ‘in the South” Sean O’Callaghan is the youngest of six children and enjoys socialising with friends and family. Sport, cars and studying current affairs are all hobbies of his. While he enjoys watching the AFL, and cheering for Essendon, undoubtedly his true love is for the game of football – or soccer, as some prefer to call it. Sean recently completed RMIT University’s Graduate Diploma in Journalism and now works with the Herald-Sun and Nine News. He hopes to work hard over the coming months and make the most of the opportunities that lie ahead. Sean looks forward to learning and contributing to the Freemason craft and is excited by the prospect of meeting fellow brothers along the way. He was truly honoured to be installed at Brighton District 37 alongside his best friend, Ryan Davis. multiple sclerosis, malaria and antibiotics. My interests outside work include; reading, sailing, swimming (snorkelling), body surfing, golf, walking, the environment and at some point I would like to consider tennis again. My father and grandfather were both highly regarded freemasons and during my childhood we attended numerous Lodge functions. My decision to join was influenced by two factors. One, our family history, and secondly, a chance meeting with Andrew Reay who attended Hampton Primary with me. I look forward to experiencing what my father and grandfather loved so dearly’. David Manallack was born in 1961 at the Queen Vic, here in Melbourne. He writes; ‘Our family home is in Hampton and we spent a great deal of our summers on the beach. I studied at the Victorian College of Pharmacy to complete both a Bachelors and Masters in pharmacy. This was the beginning of my journey into science. The inspiration for this came from our medicinal chemistry professor (Peter Andrews) who gave engaging lectures about drug design. At the time, molecular modelling was a young science and I was able to immerse myself into the field. At the end of my PhD (1989) I took off to the UK for post-doc training in molecular modelling at Smith Kline & French. It was after one warm summer’s day that I went to a party and met my wife to be, Anna. We have two boys, Thomas, 16 and Mats, 14, both excelling at Mentone Grammar. Fifteen year after arriving in the UK, I returned to Australia with family in tow. Setting up had its ups and downs until I finally got a senior lectureship at Monash University. My research interests lie in the discovery and development of new medicines and we’re heavily involved in research on David Manallack. David’s son, Mats, won a Freemasons Victoria Middle School Scholarship recently. Mats attends Mentone Grammar. His hobbies are piano, basketball, football, playing video games and reading. His interests are watching sports such as football and cricket on TV and playing them, cooking, body surfing music. Andrew Burman: “I am 46 and engaged to be married to Sonia Krolke. We are to be wed on 28 December, 2012 at Holy Trinity Barrabool near Ceres Victoria. I have one daughter Elizabeth who is 10 years old. I was born in Melbourne. I live in Brighton. I work for my father’s accounting firm. My father, Richard is a Freemason and a member of Old Melburnians 317. I played Rugby Union and Turf Cricket for many years but now my sporting career is confined to an occasional bad round of golf and weeding. I support Melbourne Football Club. I won’t name the winners of the wooden spoon prize! The following photos capture some highlights of a very pleasant day; Vale Lawrence Burley RWBro. Lawrie Burley passed to the Grand Lodge above on the 14th March, after a long illness. We had not seen Lawrie in Lodge for many years, as he and his wife Jenny, had moved to Anglesea, and Lawrie was in very poor health for the last 10 years. Andrew Burman Shane Webster was born in 1971, in the former Yugoslavia. He completed his education with a course at the Land Surveying College in Sarajevo. In 2006 he emigrated to Australia, and is now working as an aged person’s carer. His interest in the Craft was initiated when he read a book on the Freemason of Yugoslavia in 1988. This interest was reenforced while he spent some time in Norway, in 2005. He has investigated the Craft in books and on the Internet, and now looks forward to finding out about the ‘real thing’. Shane was introduced to the Lodge via the Grand Lodge Membership Committee. He lives in Caulfield, quite close to Phil Barber. He is interested in shooting, mixed martial arts and military history. “At least I can hold it!” “Where did my bowl go?” Lawrie was born in Hobart in 1923. He served in the 2nd AIF in New Guinea, and after discharge with the rank of corporal, moved to Melbourne, where he met Jenny. He was Manager of John Ford’s (another past Lodge member) engineering business, and a keen water and snow skier. He and Jenny have two children, and lived in Vermont before moving to their beach house in Anglesea. Lawrie joined Lodge No. 539 in 1947, and became a founding member of Lodge of Fervour in 1949. He was Master of Fervour in 1963, and gained the rank of Past Junior Grand Warden. He was also a member of Earl Kitchener Mark Lodge, and his 50-year Mark jewel was presented to him at his home in Anglesea by WBros. Bunton, Wing, Cove and Ford. Our deepest condolences go to Jenny and her family. LODGE GOLF DAY Shane Webster “My team is pretty good!” Family Barefoot Bowling Day We will hit off at 8 am on Sunday, 27th May, at Cheltenham Golf Club. This will be a fun day, so you don’t need to be a golfer to join in. After 8 holes we will end with a BBQ and prize giving. Final numbers are needed by the 8th May. Give it a go! I guarantee you will do better than me! A happy group of about 35 members and family gathered at Brighton Bowling Club on Sunday, 25th March for a go at lawn bowling. There was plenty of enthusiasm, if not a lot of skill, but everyone had a great time, especially the children. We rounded off the afternoon with a barbeque and prize-giving. Not surprisingly, Terry Nash’s team won the prize, as Terry is “Let’s sit this one out!” Brighton District Lodge No37 - Originally the Lowry Lodge constituted on 20th December 1861 in the America Hotel, Woodend, Victoria, registered under English Constitution No.1224 on 23 August 1862, becoming Lodge No 37 in 1885 with formation of Victorian Constitution.
