Nuns - Religious Assistants - New Federation/Association Members - Deceased Nuns – 4 BEATIFICATION OF MARIA CANDIDA OF THE EUCHARIST On the 21st March His Holiness John Paul II solemnly beatified in St Peters Square, MARIA CANDIDA OF THE EUCHARIST (1884-1949), Discalced Carmelite Nun of the Ragusa Carmel, Sicily. Maria Candida was an authentic mystic, the Pope said in his homily during the Mass, it formed the centre of her entire existence, following the Carmelite tradition, in particular the example of Saint Teresa of Jesus and Saint John of the Cross. She so loved Jesus in the Divine Sacrament as to create a constant and burning desire to be an untiring apostle of the Eucharist. I am certain, the Pope concluded, that Blessed Maria Candida will continue to help the Church from heaven, so that it will grow in wonder and love of this great Mystery of our faith. More than a thousand pilgrims from Sicily congregated in St Peters Square for Maria Candida and even more from other parts of Italy. The Discalced Carmelite Friars, whose return to Sicily she worked hard to achieve, were represented by more than one hundred priests. Our International College provided twelve ministers for the ceremony, while other Carmelites assisted, in close proximity to the Holy Father. Three others were beatified together with Maria; three founders of Religious Congregations: Don Luigi Talamoni (1848-1926), Matilde of the Sacred Heart, Téllez Robles (1841-1902), Piedad of the Cross, Ortiz Real (1842-1916).
