Public Library Division Action Plan 2006 - 2009 The following is the proposed Action Plan for PLD for 20062009 as proposed by the PLD Planning Committee. GOAL I: INCREASE AWARENESS OF PUBLIC LIBRARIES AMONG ELECTED OFFICIALS AND THE GENERAL POPULACE Strategies: 1. PLD Chair will provide legislative goals to PLD members each legislative year. 2. PLD will actively support the TLA’s legislative effort including assistance in organizing and sponsoring Legislative Day. 3. PLD will inform members of the activities of the TL-PAC. 4. PLD will contribute annually to the TLA Legislative committee. GOAL II: PROMOTE ACTIVE AND DIVERSE MEMBERSHIP IN PUBLIC LIBRARIES DIVISION Strategies: 1. The PLD Membership Committee, through TLA, will contact new PLD members. 2. New member involvement will be promoted through the PLD Membership Committee activities at TLA Annual Conference 3. The PLD Membership Committee will promote the advantages of membership at various venues, including technology venues provided by TLA. GOAL III: PARTNER WITH OTHER TLA ROUND TABLES AND INTEREST GROUPS TO SUPPORT AND PROMOTE EXCELLENCE IN THEIR PROVISION OF PUBLIC LIBRARY SERVICE Strategies: 1. PLD Chair will appoint PLD members who are also members of other TLA units to the PLD Program Committee. The following are examples of Round Tables and Interest Groups from which the appointments should be made: Acquisitions and Collection Development Genealogy Round Table Children's Round Table Small Community Libraries Round Table Young Adult Round Table Supervision, Management and Administration Round Table Public Library Dividision April 24, 2006 1 GOAL IV: PROMOTE MAINTENANCE AND INCREASED FUNDING FOR PUBLIC LIBRARY SERVICE Strategies: 1. Sponsor advocacy programs at Annual Conferences on increasing support for public libraries. GOAL V: ENCOURAGE EXCELLENCE IN FORMAL EDUCATION AND CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR PUBLIC LIBRARIANS Strategies: 1. Proactively seek conference programs that inform members about the following: 1. Changes in technology 2. Significant public library research reports 3. Innovative management of public libraries 2. Seek and support other methods of providing education materials to members, including desktop learning, conference call programs and distance learning programs. 3. PLD, when requested, will underwrite the cost of PLD mailing labels and/or electronic dissemination to library schools, TLA Districts, and other non-profit and library support organizations to facilitate notification of courses and other educational opportunities. 4. PLD will collaborate with public library continuing education organizations, (i.e., other TLA Units, TMLDA, TSL, etc.) to co-sponsor program(s) and preconference(s) on current public library issues. These program(s) typically are scheduled with TLA Annual Conference but should be considered at other times to accommodate the educational needs of those who may be unable to attend the conference. 5. Nominate and support Public Librarians to TALL TEXANS. GOAL VI: DEFINE ROLES FOR THE PUBLIC LIBRARY IN RELATION TO LITERACY Strategies: 1. PLD Chair will appoint a liaison to work with the TLA Literacy Committee to respond to statewide literacy needs. Public Library Dividision April 24, 2006 2 GOAL VII: PROMOTE INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM IN TEXAS PUBLIC LIBRARIES Strategies: 1. PLD will support new methods to educate librarians and citizens on the principles of intellectual freedom and open access through various promotional venues, especially emphasizing issues of access to Internet and electronic resources. 2. PLD will consider co-sponsoring, with other TLA units, training programs on Intellectual Freedom and open access for public librarians at Annual Conference. GOAL VIII: WORK WITH FRIENDS AND TRUSTEES TO GAIN GREATER SUPPORT FOR PUBLIC LIBRARIES Strategies: 1. Immediate Past Chair of PLD will serve as Ex-Officio on the Board of the Library Friends, Trustees, and Advocates Round Table 2. Past Chair of the Library Friends, Trustees, and Advocates Round Table will serve as Ex-Officio on the PLD Board. 3. PLD will co-sponsor programs related to library advocacy with the Library Friends, Trustees, and Advocates Round Table. 4. PLD will encourage members to nominate laypersons to participate in the Tall Texans Leadership Development Program. Public Library Dividision April 24, 2006 3
