252 Groups February 2016, Week 2 Small Group, K-1 The Biggest Losers Bible Story: The Biggest Losers (People help Moses) • Exodus 17:8-13 Bottom Line: We can work together to help someone else succeed. Memory Verse: “Two people are better than one. They can help each other in everything they do.” Ecclesiastes 4:9, NIrV Life App: Cooperation—working together to do more than you can do alone. Basic Truth: I should treat others the way I want to be treated. Social: Providing Time for Fun Interaction (Small Groups, 15 minutes) Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience today’s story. Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Kids are often competing with each other, so today’s Bottom Line might be a bit counterintuitive for some. Pray that God would break through these barriers and soften kids’ hearts to see that He wants us to cooperate with our peers to contribute to the success of someone else. 1. Early Arriver Idea What You Need: An offering container What You Do: Collect kids’ offerings as they arrive. Talk about what the word “succeed” means. To succeed means to do what you were trying to do. Ask kids about a time when they helped someone else succeed—when they helped someone do what they were trying to do. Start by giving the kids a personal example or telling them a famous story to help them understand what it means to succeed. 2. Easier with a Friend What You Need: Stopwatch or timer What You Do: Time kids to see how long they can hold their arms straight out to the side without dropping their arms. Then time them again with their arms straight out in front while holding hands with a friend. ©2015 The reThink Group, Inc. [Transition] Today in Large Group, we are going to hear about some friends who helped each other do this same thing—with pretty crazy results!” Lead your group to the Large Group area. Groups: Creating a Safe Place to Connect (Small Groups, 25 minutes) Create a safe place to connect and learn how the Bible story applies to real life experiences, through interactive activities and discussion questions. 1. Pullback Attack (application activity / review the Bible story) What You Need: Pullback cars; 1 for each kid, painter’s tape What You Do: Choose one kid to be Moses and two others to be Aaron and Hur. The other kids will be the Amalekites. Ask Moses to stand in the center of your space. Aaron and Hur should stand next to him. Use the tape to make a circle around these three, leaving an extra three feet or so of space around them inside the circle. Tell the Amalekites they must stay outside the circle, and give each of them a pullback car. Explain that the Amalekites will use the pullback cars to attack Moses, who will not be able to defend himself. Instead, Aaron and Hur must defend him from the cars. During the attack, the Amalekites must not step inside the circle, but they can reach in and grab any cars that might not have reached Moses and that Aaron and Hur have not confiscated. Once all cars have been collected by Aaron and Hur, allow kids to switch roles and play again. Ask kids to tell you how this activity was like or unlike what happened in the Bible story. Here are some ideas: o Just like in the Bible story, Aaron and Hur worked together to help Moses. o Just like in the Bible story, Moses wasn’t physically involved in the fight. o Unlike the Bible story, the Amalekites weren’t attacking Moses himself, they were attacking the Israelites as a whole. o Unlike the Bible story, there were real weapons involved, not pullback cars. What You Say: “This was a silly way to re-enact the Bible story, but I bet you’ll remember it! But what I want you to remember more than the car attack is that Aaron and Hur worked together to help their friend Moses— and Joshua and the rest of the Israelites—succeed. They saw a need, and they helped fill it. That’s what we’re focusing on this week—seeing someone’s need and working together with someone else to help that person succeed. [Make It Personal] (Tell kids about a time when you and a few others worked together to help someone else succeed.) [Bottom Line] We can work together to help someone else succeed.” * 2. How Will You Help? (application activity) What You Need: Pullback cars; 1 for each kid, “A,” “B,” and “C” papers ©2015 The reThink Group, Inc. Read a scenario (see below) and the three options. Tell kids to decide which option they would prefer to do, and then send their pullback car to the corresponding letter. Repeat with the second scenario. Scenarios: o Scenario 1: A kid in your class broke his arm yesterday, and it’s the arm he writes with. Uh-oh! He needs some help in order to succeed at school. How will you and your friends help him? A) Make a plan with some of your friends in your class to help him write for the next few weeks. Maybe you help during math, another friend helps during history, and another friend helps during science. B) Offer to carry his book bag, lunch bag, and other items to and from lunch, special classes, and to the pick-up line after school. C) Gather some friends to play games with him during recess that won’t require him using his arms. o Scenario 2: Your mom just had a baby, and you have two other siblings. She doesn’t have enough time to get everything done right now, and she’s exhausted. How will you and your siblings help your mom succeed? A) Be on dinner duty every night. Set the table, clear the table, do the dishes, and even fix the food if your mom will let you! B) Tag team with your older brother to help out with the little ones not just when your mom asks, but a few more hours each day. C) Talk to your dad about how you and your siblings can do something super special for your mom, like buying her a gift, watching the baby for an hour (if you have older siblings) while she and your dad go out to dinner, or just being quiet and giving her a silent house for an hour! What You Say: “There are LOTS of ways [Bottom Line] we can work together to help someone else succeed. We’re often told to look out for ourselves first and make sure we succeed, but it’s kind of unusual to work together to help someone else succeed. But that’s what the Bible teaches us to do! It’s what Aaron and Hur did, and it’s one way we can change the world around us. Think about how many people were affected because Aaron and Hur helped Moses succeed—the entire nation of Israel, which was millions of people! Wow! We might not affect the lives of millions of people, but we can help others succeed right here in our own community and maybe touch the lives of 1, 3, 10, or 50 people. I’d say that would be a success!” 3. In Motion (memory verse activity) What You Need: Bibles What You Do: Look up the verse as a group and say it together. ©2015 The reThink Group, Inc. All rights reserved. • www.ThinkOrange.com If you change the content of this document, please add to the copyright: Adapted by (your name/organization name/date). 3 252 Groups February 2016, Week 2 Small Group, K-1 Work together to come up with motions for the verse. Kids are free to think of motions on their own, with your help. But here are a few to help get started: o “Two are”: hold up two fingers o “Better than”: give thumbs up o “One”: hold up 1 finger o “They can help each other”: put your arm around someone else’s shoulder o “In everything they do”: move hands (palms up) in circle motion from center of body to outside of body Say the verse again with the motions. Guide the kids to say it faster and faster while doing the motions. See how fast they can go! What You Say: “Whew! Those were some fast motions! This is an important verse because it reminds us that we need each other, even when we think we can do everything ourselves. No matter what, we need to work with others because [Bottom Line] we can work together to help someone else succeed.” Pray and Dismiss What You Need: No supplies needed What You Do: Have kids sit in a circle. Pray, thanking God for all the people in our lives who work together to help us and take care of us. Instruct kids to think of one person in their lives who helps them, such as a teacher, parent, coach, etc. Ask one kid to stand up and name someone who helps him. Ask that kid to then reach out his hand and help up the person next to him in the circle, who will then stand up and say his person, and so on. What You Say: “Dear God, thank You for giving us people in our lives to help us. Thank You that we don’t have to do everything by ourselves and thank You that we can help each other. We pray that You will show us how to help one another every day. Amen.” ©2015 The reThink Group, Inc.
