M anaging Dysphagia in an Evidence-Seeking World This one-day workshop will address relevant topics on assessment, treatment and management of persons with Dysphagia. Discussions will be interactive and focus on aspects that impact the everyday practice of the speech-language pathologist in all settings; from acute to long- term care, from rehabilitation to residential settings. The audience will leave with a greater understanding of controversial and practice issues, and be ready to incorporate new or updated knowledge on Monday. Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Outline the four major levels of evidence 2. Describe three specific changes related to presbyphagia in normal aging 3. Develop alternative assessment protocols for assessing dysphagia secondary to common etiologies 4. He completed his M.S. at Columbia University and his Ph.D. at The Graduate Center, CUNY. Luis has authored articles on dysphagia, multiculturalism, cultural competence, leadership and quality improvement. He has presented locally, nationally and internationally. Luis is a Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing (BCS-S) and a member of the Dysphagia Research Society (DRS). He has served on several local and national boards and committees. At present he is Chair of the American Board of Swallowing & Swallowing Disorders; Past Chair of the ASHA PAC Board; and Immediate Past Chair of the NY State Board for SLP and Audiology. Luis became an ASHA Fellow in 2009 and in 2006 he received ASHA’s Certificate of Recognition for Special Contributions in Multicultural Affairs. Current research interests include the physiology of swallowing in older adults; the role of decompensation on swallow function in the elderly; pill swallowing in adults; the effects of deep brain stimulation on swallow physiology; and the impact of culture on all clinical interactions.
