You will be issued a science textbook, Focus on Life Science, for your use at home. You will be given the following: 1. Science Workbook 2. 70 page Spiral bound notebook The spiral notebook is used for lecture notes and related assignments throughout the year. Your Spiral Notebook will be collected and graded on each test day. Behavior Standards 1. Be in your seat before the bell rings. 2. Follow directions the first time given. 3. Keep hands, feet, and all objects to yourself. 4. Raise your hand to be recognized. Assignment Calendar Each day you will record the daily agenda in your assignment calendar. This information will always be posted on the board and kept in a Daily Agenda File Holder located in the classroom on the back counter. It is also posted on Haiku daily using the Calendar tab. Grades Academic grades are based on an accumulated point system. Labs, activities, quizzes, tests, projects and completed assignments are worth points. Four additional tests called Standards Based Benchmark Exams will be given each quarter and represent 10% of your final academic grade. Grades are posted in Infinite Campus regularly. If you do not have access to the internet, please let me know Homework Your homework grades will consist of marking and charting Cornell notes or other assigned work, completing work assigned in your spiral notebook. Your homework represents your effort grade. Please see me if you had an extraordinary circumstance that prevented you from completing your homework; I will do my best to work out an alternate due date. Tests Tests and quizzes will be given periodically. Tests will be announced about a week in advance. All tests are open-note from your spiral notebook provided Cornell notes are complete with questions, icons, and summaries for each lesson, so all information written in your spiral notebook can be used on the tests. Citizenship Citizenship grades are based on your cooperation and participation in class, your ability to follow the classroom standards of behavior, your respect toward classroom property, and your respect toward me and other students. Respect is key! Absences It will be your responsibility to make up all work missed while you were absent. There are two ways to minimize make-up work stress: a. Call a study buddy. _____________________ Phone ____________ b. Consult the Science Daily Agenda Located in the classroom on the back counter for the date you missed. C. Visit the Haiku website for this class. The site contains a calendar tab with the daily agenda, all Cornell notes for each lecture, chapter vocabulary, links for simulations from Explore Learning, and all project guidelines. Missed Video If you miss a video while you were absent, you will need to complete an alternate assignment. Please see me, and I will give you an alternate assignment to complete. Absent from Test Day If a test has been previously announced and you are absent on test day, you will need to make up the test before school. You must schedule the test make up time with me outside of class time. Late to Class Being late is impolite, disrespectful, and disrupts the classroom environment. You must be in your seat before the bell rings. If you are tardy, you will receive lunch detention. Hall Passes There is ample time throughout the day to go to the bathroom; however, emergencies do arise. An emergency means that you are cut and bleeding or need to vomit. If you have a medical condition that requires frequent trips to the bathroom, please let me know. I am looking forward to a successful year together! Remember we are all working to achieve our goals, and I will help any way I can. With our new digital tools of Haiku and our site license to Explore Learning, I hope communication becomes seamless and more productive. We’re going to be a strong team! Respect goes a long, long way. I have read and understand the course syllabus for 8th Grade Physical Science. I agree to do my best to fulfill the class guidelines and expectations.
