TASKS TO COMPLETE BEFORE END OF QUARTER CONFERENCE 1. Reading Record: Make sure that it is completely filled out with page number total for first quarter, which is the box at the bottom left of the page. Reading record is on the inside front cover of your spiral notebook. 2. Someday list: You should have the last page in your spiral notebook titled “Someday List.” What’s on this list? You should have at least FOUR books that you would like to read in the future. Look at your book tasting sheet and add books--to the Someday List--that you said “yes,” you’d like to read. 3. Spiral notebook check: This will happen during your conference. Make sure all pages are numbered properly and have the information you need. If your pages are sticking out of the notebook, trim them. If you are missing pages, spiral notebook pages are in the bin at the front of the classroom, and it’s labeled. 4. Reading Goals: Look at page 4 of your spiral notebook. You will explain how you met your goals for quarter one. Before we meet, write two goals for quarter two. Remember, goals must be measurable and realistic. 5. Pick up sample writing goals from white table. Glue this page on p. 25 of your spiral. On page 26 of your spiral, use the top half of the page to write two goals for Quarter Two. You will have an opportunity to write a free choice piece during quarter two (just in case there was a certain type of writing you want to make a goal). 6. Select a book. Think about a book you have read this quarter. Would it make for an entertaining Book Talk? When you come to the conference, bring the title and author of a book that you would like to share with the class in the form of a Book Talk. Widely popular books are already known so pick another title. Write the title and author here: ______________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ (title) _______________________________________________________________________ (author) 7. Journal writing. In your journal, after the “Signposts” entry dated 10/14 or 10/15, I want to see a minimum of three pages of free write—meaning writing not assigned by me; topic and style of your choice. 8. How does what you learn in English apply to the real world? Make notes about this in your journal. Title the page: “ English in the Real World.” Give at least three examples with detail.
