The 5th Japan – Korea – China International Workshop
Present Earth Surface Processes and Historical Environmental Changes in East Asia
-Terrestrial Processes in Loess-covering Zone and its Surroundings October 7-11, 2008, Hakodate, Japan
(3rd Circular)
Outline
The purpose of the Japan-Korea-China (JKC) Workshop is to exchange modern and historical
environmental information in East Asia region for clarifying environmental processes and
changes in East Asia. The JKC International Workshop was initially held in Daejeon, Korea
(2004), and was subsequently in Kanazawa, Japan (2005), Seoul, Korea (2006) and Nanjing,
China (2007). The 5th Workshop is again Japanese turn. It will be held at Hakodate, Hokkaido
in the Northern Island of Japan. Hokkaido is a rapidly developed district after the Meiji
Revolution (1868). There are various lakes in this district including many volcano-related
ones, which are very convenient for discussing terrestrial (lake-catchment) processes and
environments. This district has also received many aeolian materials (loess, etc.) from the
Asian Continent. This is why the subtitle is given in this workshop.
Main topics:
1. Present lake-catchment processes: Observation and measurement
2. Present environmental processes and natural hazards
3. Lacustrine sediment choronology
4. Ecological response to human activity and natural variation and their interactions
5. Global changes and regional environmental change
6. Modeling and forecasting environment changes
7. General discussion and some topics for the future cooperation.
