Job Description Dr. Samuel L. Bossard Memorial Library Gallia County District Library Position: Position Type: Immediate Supervisor: Supervises: LIBRARY PAGE/SHELVER Non- Exempt, Hourly Library Page Supervisor No supervisory responsibilities General Summary Under supervision of library supervisors, the Library Page/Shelver maintains order of collections throughout the Library by means of shelving, shelf-reading, inspecting, and sorting; also assists patrons in locating library materials; answers general directional questions; may perform page-level work in other departments. Essential Functions and Responsibilities -Learns library classification systems -Sorts materials by call number prior to shelving -Re-shelves library materials to the proper locations in the library -Updates & maintains new book racks/displays -Shelf-reads accurately to ensure that materials are in correct order on the shelves -Straightens shelves in all areas of the library -Shifts library materials on shelves as assigned or as necessary -Brings materials in poor condition to the attention of the Circulation/Technical Services staff -Assists patrons in locating materials on the shelves -Assists patrons in the use of copiers, PAC terminals and other equipment as necessary -Answers basic directional questions -Assists with inventory of library collection -Assists with library programs when requested -Searches for library materials on shelves from printouts and lists -Collects library materials from outdoor book drops -Cleans DVDs and CDs by use of machine -Performs library closing procedures -Attends staff and departmental meetings as required -Performs page-level work in other departments, as assigned -Actively supports library goals and objectives as adopted by the Library Administration and the Library Board of Trustees -Performs other duties as required and assigned Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities -Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal classification system -Ability to accurately shelve library materials by filing both alphabetically and numerically -Ability to work at heights while shelving materials -Ability to operate general office equipment (including but not limited to a computer, photocopier, telephone, printer, and inventory equipment) -Ability to communicate and interact effectively with co-workers and the public in a consistent, friendly, and courteous manner. -Ability to read and communicate in both oral and written form with an understanding of the English language -Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgment in handling information and records -Must model good work habits for others (i.e. avoids personal phone calls while on duty, is punctual for desk duty) -Ability to meet the flexible scheduling needs of the Library Work Environment -Mainly indoor work environment -Subject to outdoor conditions while emptying book-drop & performing closing procedures Physical and Mental Requirements -Extensive standing, stooping, bending at the waist; kneeling or crouching -Lifting/moving books up to 50 lbs.and push carts weighing up to 150 lbs, daily -Hearing and speaking to exchange information; seeing to read -Carrying, pushing or pulling -Mental alertness, focus, and attention to details -Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; sitting for extended periods of time (while shelf-reading & assisting in various departments) Education, Experience and Training Prior experience as a school library aide or public library aide preferred, not required. Must be a minimum of sixteen (16) years of age. Must have work permit, if required by law. Must have reliable transportation. Must pass successful background check.
