IB Math SL – 1 Prerequisites: Students must complete the application process with the school prior to admittance to the IB program. Textbook: None Timeline: First Semester Functions and their Graphs Polynomial and Rational Functions Exponential and Logarithmic Functions Trigonometric Functions Grading: 60% Tests Tests will always be announced in advance. Being absent the day before a test does not excuse you from taking the test on the designated day. 20% Quizzes Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. They will cover small amounts of material. 10% Daily Daily grades include classwork, homework, and warm-up problems. Second Semester Analytic Trigonometry Additional Topics in Trig Sequences and Series Topics in Analytic Geometry Homework will be checked daily and will be checked on the basis of effort, not correctness. All problems should be attempted for full credit. Classwork is any assignment that is assigned during class (including homework assignments begun in class for practice). This will also be graded on the basis of effort, although students should be sure to ask questions during this time to ensure that they understand the concepts being targeted. Warm-ups are problems given at the beginning of class. These are usually review problems. Warm-ups help to continue to cover concepts that will be on the end-of-course exam, therefore they are very important. Warm-ups will be checked only on occasion, but should be completed when assigned to get maximum benefit. 10% Exam There will be an exam at the end of each nine week grading period. It will be a teacher made test, not a district wide test. The content included on each exam will be discussed by the teacher prior to each exam. Attendance: This is a rigorous and demanding course. Attendance is absolutely necessary. Time missed in class is difficult to make up. Please do not schedule routine appointments during this class if at all possible. When an absence is unavoidable, all make-up work should be completed as soon as possible after return. As usual, three tardies count as one unexcused absence. Missing more than 30 minutes of class also counts as an absence.
