INTRODUCTION TO PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS - COURSE SYLLABUS TEACHER: Mr. Kempf 610- 847-5131 [email is preferred] rkempf@palisadessd.org SCHEDULE: Meets daily for a semester; Period 2 (9:25am-10:54am) MATERIALS: Text: Statistical Reasoning For Everyday Life: 3rd edition. Pearson 2009. Supplies: A 3-ring binder, lined paper, pencils, erasers, and a graphing calculator. Calculator: It is required that you purchase a graphing calculator (TI-83+, TI-84, or TI 84+) or sign one out of the library. However, there are only a limited number of calculators available to sign out of the library, so you need to go quick! COURSE CONTENT DESCRIPTION OF COURSE: Introduction to Probability and Statistics is a course in statistical methods that will equip the student with the ability to work with large amounts of data. Upon completion of the course students will be able to use mathematical models to design statistical experiments, organize and interpret data, and use data to predict and communicate the meaning of specific data to those unfamiliar with the procedures and methods associated with statistics and probability. UNITS OF STUDY: Speaking of Statistics Measurement in Statistics Visual Displays of Data Describing Data A Normal World Probability in Statistics Correlation and Causality From Samples to Populations Hypothesis Testing t Tests, Two-Way Tables, and ANOVA EVALUATION: Quarter Grade: Test, Quizzes, and Performance Tasks: 80% Homework/Classwork and participation: 20% Course Grade: First Quarter: 40% Second Quarter: 40% Final Exam: 20% CLASSROOM POLICIES: ~ Absences, lateness, and plagiarism will be dealt with according to school policy. See your student handbook for details. ~ If you miss class to participate in a school-approved trip or activity, assignments will still be due on original due date. See your student handbook for details. ~ If you miss class for an excused absence (i.e. illness) you will have as many days as you were gone to make up your work (homework, quizzes, or tests). For example, if you are gone for three days, you will have three days from the day you return to make up your work. ~ Disruptions in class will not be tolerated. Discipline issues will be handled as follows… 1st Offence: Verbal Warning 2nd Offence: 30 minute detention after school 3rd Offence: 1 hour detention after school and parent/guardian notification 4th Offence: 1 hour detention and meeting requested with parent/guardian HOMEWORK POLICY: ~ Homework will be assigned regularly and is due the following day. Late homework will receive no credit. Work must be shown for each problem; answers only is not acceptable. Grades for homework will be determined as follows: Full credit (2pts): All problems are completed with work shown. Half credit (1 pt): Partially done, with at least half completed and work is shown. No credit (0 pts): Less than half has been attempted and/or no work is shown. PORTFOLIO ENTRIES: Projects and selected performance assessments all make great portfolio entries. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION: ~ Extra credit opportunities will be available. ~ Extra help is available most days after school (please let me know if you plan on staying after ahead of time).
