Omro Middle School June 11 – July 3, 2014 This year the summer school program is scheduled for Wednesday, June 11th to Thursday, July 3rd. Daily attendance is very important, as the duration of summer school is only 3.5 weeks. Summer school at the middle school has two different types of classes: long and short classes. Long classes will require 90 minutes of time while the short classes will require 45 minutes of time. Use the schedule below to assist you in selecting classes to fill the morning. Please be aware that this is a tentative schedule. If not enough students signed up for the classes, then the class will be cancelled and rescheduling will be necessary. Join the Reading class to not only improve your reading and writing but also to discover great books and great stories. The class will read at least one novel during the summer school time. You will get to write a number of stories and take one to a final draft ready for all to read. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Math – Short Class Teacher: Ms. Hicks Grades: 6-8 Math is fun! Join this class to improve your math skills. Math will then be fun and easier for the next year. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A New Pianist is Born – Two Short Classes Teacher: Mrs. King Grades: 5-12 Each of us has an inborn rhythm and song just waiting to express to the world. Come and learn how to play the piano, read music, learn rhythms, and impress your family and friends! Using the piano curriculum, Faber and Faber Series, you will play many songs and rhythms. Playing games that teach piano skills, you will have a FORTE! of FUN each day. Piano will be taught in the Omro Middle School choir room where there are enough pianos for all students. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------“Grillin’ and Chillin” - Long Class Teacher: Ms. Pfister This course will focus on activities centered around cooking on the grill and picnics. This will include planning menus and budgeting, cooking with a variety of outdoor grill methods (campfires, grills, solar) and learning some outdoor games. We hope to have some fun, learn some skills and enjoy some yummy foods. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Next Teen Chef – Long Class Teacher: Mrs. Semenas Grades: 6-8 Have you ever looked in your kitchen cupboards or refrigerator and felt like, “there’s nothing to eat”? This summer you will learn how to turn simple ingredients into tasty, delicious, snacks, entrees, and desserts! In this course we will learn some basic cooking tips, find some new recipes, and prepare meals that everyone in your family will enjoy. There will be four-ingredient recipes, microwave recipes, and maybe even your favorite homemade recipe. Come prepared to learn, share, and enjoy cooking! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fun in the Sun – Short Class Grades: 4 - 6 TEACHER: Mr. Koehn 10:15 – 11:45 Why not start the summer out on a good note? Join us as we play various individual, team, and fitness oriented games. Some of the activities will be review from the previous school year while others will be brand new. Class will be taught in the High School Weight room. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Basketball Skills and Drills – Two Short Classes Available Grades: 4-8 Teacher: Mr. Klosterman Section 1: 8:30-10:00 Section 2: 10:15-11:45 This class will develop youth basketball skills – shooting, passing, dribbling, rebounding and defense through a variety of drills and activities used in both the middle school and high school programs. Participants will work on individual skills for the first portion of the class and then engage in a group activity to end each session. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Crafts & Books – Two Short Classes Available Grades: 4-7 Section 1: 8:30 – 10:00 Section 2: 10:15 – 11:45 Teacher: Mrs. Vlachina Beginner’s course of crocheting, knitting, and making bracelets while listening to books on CD. Learn something new this summer while listening to a variety of books on CD. We’ll learn the basic stitches or knots of each new craft and then work on our projects as we listen to and discuss books of all different genres. You will need the following materials: - a size J or K crochet hook and one skein of acrylic yarn (any color) - size 10 knitting needles and one skein of acrylic yarn (any color) - hemp (one roll) and beads (any amount or color) that will fit over that thickness of material - embroidery floss (at least 6 different colors) and beads (any amount or color) that will fit over that thickness of material. Please come with all supplies the first day. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Drumming and Strumming – Short Class Grades 4-8 Teacher: Mrs. Rank 8:30 – 10:00 This course is designed for children with an interest in learning music through drumming, singing and playing the ukulele. Students will learn songs from around the world using drums, xylophones, bells, boomwhackers and other percussion instruments. They will also learn to play melodies and chords on the ukulele and finally put the drumming and strumming together as an ensemble. Exploring music through percussion and ukuleles can build confidence, develop coordination, encourage cooperation, nurture creativity and most of all, instill a love of music! All instruments will be provided by the school. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Speed, Agility and Sports Fundamentals – Two Short Courses Teacher: Grades: 5 - 12 Section 1: 8:30 – 10:00 Section 2: 10:15 – 11:45 This course will teach students proper athletic movements for speed and agility in all sports.
