Omro School District Title I Program School District of Omro Title I Program Lynn Betts, Reading Specialist lbett@omro.k12.wi.us Nicki Mielke, Title I Reading Teacher nmiel@omro.k12.wi.us OES Room 54 – 685-3100 ext. 654 Patch Room 16 – 685-7400 ext. 516 The School District of Omro Title I program serves students in grades 1-3. Students are recognized as needing extra help in the areas of language arts (reading, writing, and grammar), math, science, and social studies by classroom teachers K-4 each spring. A Needs Assessment meeting is then held in April or May to determine where the area of greatest need is. Title I parents are invited to attend this annual meeting through an invite sent home. Language arts is the area of greatest need for the 20132014 school year. The School District of Omro has an early intervention philosophy when it comes to literacy. Students in grades 1, 2, and 3 will receive the Title I support for the 2013-2014 school year. Assessment Every fall, the Title I teachers take the list of students recognized by the classroom teachers as needing extra help, and assess the students. Assessment in first grade includes: sight word identification, letter/sound recognition, phonemic awareness (hearing and sounding out words), and sentence writing. Assessment in 2nd grade includes: sight word recognition, blend identification (sh, th, wh, ch, br, tr, fr, gr), sentence dictation, guided reading level, and story writing. Assessment in 3rd grade focuses on reading, comprehension and writing. Students are assessed in sight word spelling, sentence dictation, guided reading level, a comprehension passage, and their Language Usage score from the district MAPS testing. Students are assessed again at the end of the school year to show growth. Students are then put onto a prioritized ranking list. Students are served by this rank order (lowest to highest). Parents are invited to have their child participate in the program. A permission form, compact, and parent policy must be signed before a student can meet with a Title I teacher. A fall parent meeting is held to inform parents of their child’s needs academically and to answer questions and sign forms. At the end of the school year, another parent meeting is held to share progress and for parents to share their thoughts about the program. Services Offered 1st grade – Invited 1st graders participate in LLI – Leveled Literacy Intervention. The Title program previously used the ROFAH program in 1st grade. Students are seen daily for 30 minutes to work on reading skills, comprehension, and writing. Books are sent home with the children every evening to read to parents. The books will alternate between instructional and independent reading levels for the child. 2nd grade – Invited 2nd graders are seen 5 times a week for 30 min. to work on reading, writing, and skills. Second graders will also be using the Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) program by Fountas and Pinnell. Students will be bringing home books to read each evening. They will alternate between independent and instructional reading levels for the child. 3rd grade - Invited 3rd graders will participate in LLI. The third grade LLI focuses on comprehension, response to reading, and word building. Students will be seen for a minimum of 30 minutes per day/4 days a week. At any time during the school year, students may be dismissed from receiving Title services. Students are reassessed and classroom teachers are conferred with regarding dismissal. A dismissal letter will be sent home. Did You Know? *Students that do not read during the summer can lose up to 3 months of reading gains! *Students that read all year long actually can make reading gains during the summer! *Teachers typically spend 4-6 weeks of the new school year re-teaching skills lost throughout the summer! What Can I Do As a Parent? Be involved. By coming to parent meetings and conferences, parents are kept up to date of their child’s progress and receive tips to help their child at home. Read with/to your child. Reading for a few minutes each day throughout the entire year (summer too!), increases a child’s vocabulary, helps them read with expression, and keeps those skills fresh. It also shows that you think reading is important and that outlook rubs off on your child. Other Important Things To Note Two parent meetings are held each year, one in fall and one in spring. At both meetings, you will be informed of your child’s academic needs and progress. Bi-monthly newsletters will come home with tips and tricks for you to try at home as well as any news and updates from the Title I staff. You will receive a Title I report card along with the regular report card each quarter. The Title I staff is here to help! If we can help in anyway, please feel free to contact us. As parents and teachers, we need to work together to help our students become lifelong readers.
