Job Specification
1.
Summary of the broad purpose of the position in relation to organisation goals
(Its expected outcome and how it is achieved)
Provide administrative and operational support to the RAH Mortuary / Tissue Bank, Surgical Pathology Clerical,
Reception and Histopathology Laboratory as needs arise by:
 assisting the laboratory by collecting and accessioning specimens, delivering slides, filing blocks and
general house keeping.
 performing a wide range of clerical, technical and support tasks in the Mortuary / Tissue Bank including
administrative documentation, processing, and data entry.
 performing varied clerical duties for Surgical Pathology Reception involving slide filing, sorting and
enveloping reports and retrieving reports and slides for clinical meetings and seminars.

Reporting/Working Relationship

Reports to the Laboratory Manager, Mortuary Manager and Clerical Manager, Surgical Pathology, through the
section supervisor.

SA Pathology is a 24 hour 7day week organisation. The appointee may be required to work shift rosters
and weekends, and may be required to work extended hours on an overtime basis which may include
public holidays.
Depending on work requirements the appointee may be transferred to other locations within SA Pathology
to perform work of a similar nature appropriate to the classification either on a permanent or temporary
basis.
Appointment is subject to a satisfactory Criminal History Report obtained through the Screening and
Licensing Branch, Dept Families & Communities, to be renewed every three years thereafter from date of
issue

Statement of Key Outcomes and Associated Activities
(Group into major areas of responsibility/activity and list in descending order of importance)
a) Assist in the operation of the Mortuary / Tissue Bank by:
 contributing to the clerical and support systems in the mortuary by processing the documentation
involved in the receipt, storage, autopsy and release of bodies.
 assisting in the preparation of bodies for viewing.
 releasing of remains of deceased to funeral directors
 monitoring stocks of all consumables and other supplies held in the SA Tissue Bank and order
replacements to maintain adequate stock levels
 receipting and repackaging of allografts
 packing and despatch of allografts for operations.
b) Perform administrative support to the Surgical Pathology Reception by:


answering telephone enquiries and providing information as required;
collating and enveloping reports

filing slides

retrieving slides for clinico-pathological meetings

assisting in the retrieval of blocks and slides from off-site storage facilities

collecting archived material and supplies from Supply
c) Contribute to laboratory operations by:

collecting specimens from the RAH and DCP reception

assisting with accessioning of specimens

filing specimens and tissue blocks

delivering slides to pathologists

assisting in the disposal of waste solvents

assisting in the operation of laboratory re-cycling units

general house-keeping
d) Contribute to Occupational Health and Safety within SA Pathology by taking reasonable care to
protect personal health and safety of other staff, wear protective clothing and use safety equipment as
directed.
e) Provide services for the South Australian community consistent with the policies of the elected
Government by complying with the Code of Ethics for South Australian Public Sector Employees, SA
Pathology Code of Ethics and with all other policies contained in SA Pathology Corporate Manual.
f)
Comply with the Principles of the Code of Fair Information Practice, adopted by the Department of
Health, which regulate the collection, use, disclosure storage and transfer of all personal patient/client
information within the organisation and throughout its funded service providers.
