Online Courses in HUX General Instructions Humanities Master of Arts California State University, Dominguez Hills Selected HUX courses are offered as either correspondence-based or online courses. If you have enrolled in an online section of a HUX course (these are section number 41 HUX 501-505), you need to read the following carefully before you begin your course work. Some aspects of online courses are like our correspondence courses: you still have to order your textbooks, the texts and assignments are the same, and course materials are accessed on Blackboard. But other aspects are different. In an online course section: 1) you submit your assignments via email, and 2) you may receive ongoing communications and updates from your professor via Blackboard. Using Email to Communicate You can communicate with your professor via email, in addition to any office phone number that he or she may provide. BEAR IN MIND THAT YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN OFFICIAL UNIVERSITY RECORDS IS THE EMAIL ADDRESS THAT THE UNIVERSITY HAS CREATED FOR YOU. You were sent a notice of this address. If the instructor uses Blackboard to send a general notice to the class, the system will use this CSUDH email address. So you need to be sure to use this account. CHECK IT FREQUENTLY EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT IN AN ONLINE COURSE. UNIVERSITY OFFICES ALSO SEND IMPORTANT MESSAGES THROUGH STUDENT EMAIL. Go to www.csudh.edu Quick Links menu. Click on MyCSUDH and login with your User Name and Password. There are links to Student Email and Blackboard. Electronic Submission of Assignments In online sections of HUX you submit your assignments electronically. Some instructors prefer that you send papers to their email addresses, while others will ask you to use the “Digital Dropbox” feature on Blackboard. Read the letter of introduction from the professor for your section of the course (that is posted on Blackboard with the course guide) for his or her requirements. Contact the HUX office if you have trouble accessing the documents. Unless instructed otherwise in the letter, submit your papers in RTF (rich text file) format. This format preserves your formatting and is readable by all modern word processing programs. You can save in this format in any word processing program (choose File—Save As and then select RTF). Be sure to put on the first page of your paper file complete course and assignment information, along with your name and email address. Do NOT submit a title page as a separate document. Name the file you submit with your last name, course number, and assignment number (e.g., Smith 547-1.RTF). Submit a copy of your paper to the HUX office by emailing it to huxpapers@csudh.edu. NOTE: be sure that each assignment lists your name, course and instructor name, and the term of enrollment. Blackboard Your first step, before you begin your readings or papers, is to log on to the Blackboard website for your course. The heart of the online course in essence is on Blackboard, and the instructor may have already posted announcements and updates by the time class has begun. To log on go to www.csudh.edu and click on MyCSUDH. Once you log on to your account you will see a link to log on to Blackboard. After logging in you will see webpages for all of the courses in which you are enrolled. Click on the appropriate one. Then read any announcements posted and click on the various links on the left column to see what the instructor has posted. Because Blackboard gives all instructors the same basic template, don’t expect to find every course using every link. Each instructor uses the abilities of Blackboard in different ways.
