THE WHITE FILLY By London Marchelle Kahler © Copyright 2006 by First Financial Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. Chapter 1 The Stock Fair Five Arabian fillies ran in a circle. Men shouted, horses whinnied. Karen watched the excitement. She and her brother Jake were watching horses be trained. “How would you like a horse of your own?” asked Karen’s dad. “Really? I could have a horse!” asked Karen excitedly She had never owned a horse. She took care of the horses at her Uncle Roy’s ranch. Karen loved to ride the horses. Her favorite was Veronica. She was a palomino Quarter horse that loved attention. “Hey, Karen!” shouted Jake “What to check out the cattle barn?” “OK,” said Karen taking one last look at the corral. As she entered the cattle barn Karen plugged her nose. She thought horses smelt better than cattle. She and her family saw Texas long horns, Angus bulls, and lots of Dairy cows. Later they passed the barn where people sold horses. “May I look?” asked Karen. “Sure,” said Karen’s dad. Karen ran into the barn. She stepped inside and took a deep breath. Karen loved the smell of horses. The first horse she noticed was a Paso Fino in the front corral. The horse was in very good condition and his chestnut coat gleamed. Then Karen noticed an Andalusia. This one was running in circles and neighing loudly. It was hard to tell if he was in good condition or not. Then she looked at the price. 100 dollars for a horse that needs training. She looked at a few more horses then left the barn. As they were driving home Karen looked up at the big Nevada sky and smiled. She had a great day at the stock fair. The next day Uncle Roy took Karen to pick out a horse but none really got her attention. Later in the day she wondered “What horse shall I chose?” © Copyright 2006 by First Financial Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. Chapter 2 Sonya On the last day of the stock fair Jake, Karen and their dad went to look once more at the horses. Karen stepped into the barn and something caught her attention, a white filly in the front corral. She was 100 dollars. “She’s perfected!” said Karen. “She looks skittish to me,” said Jake. “Oh! Shut up you big dope! I’ll take her!” said Karen. So they paid for the horse and got a trailer for free. Uncle Roy explained that there was a barn on his property. He also said that there was a trail leading from the barn to Karen’s house. “You can keep her there,” said Uncle Roy. “What are you going to name her?” asked Jake. “I think I’ll name her……..Sonya!” said Karen. “That’s a nice name,” said Jake. The next day Karen and Sonya went out for a ride. It was a lot of fun. It was noon by the time they got back. Karen put a blanket on Sonya and turned her out in Uncle Roy’s paddock. After dinner and putting Sonya away for the night Karen went to bed. After everyone went to bed Karen heard a noise. It sounded like Sonya! Karen jumped out of bed, ran out the door and down to Uncle Roy’s ranch. When she got there she hid behind a tree. The stall door was open and Sonya was gone! Karen knew she put Sonya in the barn. She looked every where. Sonya was nowhere to be seen! Then Karen saw a dark figure leading a white horse away. Sonya was being stolen! © Copyright 2006 by First Financial Systems, Inc. Stop that!” said the thief. Karen gasped. “Jake?!” she squeaked. “All right you win,” he said. “What are you doing with Sonya?” asked Karen. “I was taking her to get a drink,” said Jake. “Not buying it,” said Karen “Come on Jake, please?” “OK! I confess! My friend Ben dared me to ride your new horse bare back,” he said. “Well you shouldn’t do everything Ben tells you to do,” said Karen. “But he dared me!” shouted Jake. “I don’t care! Mom will hear about this!” said Karen. © Copyright 2006 by First Financial Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. Chapter 4 Big Trouble Karen put Sonya in the barn. Then she and Jake went home. When they entered the kitchen their mom was pouring some hot chocolate. “I heard you get up. Come on lets discuss what happened,” “Well, I was sleeping and I heard a noise out side,” said Karen “I went out to investigate and what do I find? Jake leading Sonya away! He said his friend dared him to ride her.” “Well,” said Karen’s mom “I don’t think it was very appropriate for Jake to ride Sonya with out asking first. I’m very disappointed Jake ,however your not grounded but I will not allow you to take any more dares from Ben.” “Yes mom,” said Jake. “Now off to bed,” she said. As Karen and Jake were walking up the stairs Jake said “I’m actually glad you caught me. Man, I really didn’t want to do that!” “Oh really,” said Karen. “No! I’m serious! He shouted. “OK,” said Karen “I’ll let you get away with it this time, but no free bees next time,” “Well there won’t be a next time!” said Jake but Karen was already gone. © Copyright 2006 by First Financial Systems, Inc. Jake said their names were Mark and Terence. Mark had a cool dude look on his face. He wore a flame t-shirt and looked as if he would say “peace out” any moment. His brown hair was overly spiked. Terence had blonde hair that was evenly laid across his head. He wore a green shirt and a friendly look on his face. “Hey Jake! Who’s your girlfriend?” asked Mark. “Uh, Mark, she’s not my girl friend,” said Jake. “What ever! Hey girl, what are you doing this afternoon?” asked Mark. “It’s Karen wise guy,” said Karen “And I am busy this afternoon!” “OK! Aren’t they lovely!” said Jake trying to break up the conversation. “Hey, hey, hey! Were not finished!” said Terence “I need to ask you something. I heard that your uncle is giving away three young stallions. My mom said I can finally get a horse! Jake says that you are really good with horses.” “You came to the right place!” said Karen. She smiled. Terence was turning out to be a really nice guy. As they walked down the path to Uncle Roy’s ranch Karen told Terence what to look for in a horse like a shinny coat and a strong back. Meanwhile, Mark was grumbling to him self. “No girl has ever turned me down! She should like me! I’ll find a way to get her. She’s my girl! Not Terence’s!” When they got to the ranch, Karen showed Terence where the horses were. Terence examined each horse. “I think that buckskin,” he said. “Good choice!” said Karen “Uncle Roy! Terence has chosen his horse!” Uncle Roy came over from the tack he was polishing and said, “Well then, let’s get a halter on im,” When they got to Terence’s house he put his horse in the one stall barn and tack room his dad had built. “What ya gonna name him?” asked Jake. “Well I was thinking about….,” started Terence. “How about Spirit?” asked Karen. “How ‘bout girl stealer, like his owner!” shouted Mark. “I had better go,” said Karen “I’ll come over later.” “Now you blew it!” said Terence. “So what girl stealer!” said Mark “I don’t want any thing to do with you and your horse lame-o!” “His name is Buck!!” shouted Terence. © Copyright 2006 by First Financial Systems, Inc. Chapter 6 Valentines Day Fall turned to winter and winter to spring and soon it was Valentines Day. “Oh boy, I hope Mark doesn’t catch me putting jellybeans in Karen’s locker,” said a very worried Terence. “Hi Terence!” said Karen. “Karen catching me is the only thing worse than Mark catching me,” Terence thought “Hi Karen!” he said. “What are you doing with the jelly beans?” asked Karen. “Um….uh….well,” Terence stammered “Oh! You caught me! Here, take the jelly beans and please, please don’t tell any one.” “OK,” said Karen. Unfortunately for Terence Mark was listening and he told EVERYONE. “Hey! Did you know Terence is in love?” Mark asked his friend Tom. “Uh well I was actually going to name him…” said Terence. “No, I didn’t,” said Tom. “Hey Mary Ann! Did you know Terence is in love?” asked Mark. “Oh! Is it me he loves?” asked Mary Ann. “Not telling,” said Mark. Now Mary Ann was a third grader who had this squeaky voice that drove every one crazy. But even though she was annoying, her blue eyes and brown hair made her 5th most popular girl in school. “Hey Terence! Do you love me?” she asked “Uh….well….um….you see…” he started. “Well, do you love me?” Mary Ann demanded. “Uh, no” said Terence nervously. © Copyright 2006 by First Financial Systems, Inc. Then the bell rang. RRRRRIIIIINNNNNGGGGG!!!!! But Mark paid no attention to it. He was to busy telling kids about Terence. Then he took waaaaayyyyy to long in the bathroom. “Mark, your late, again,” said Mark’s teacher “This is the 20th time this month! Why are you late? Because you have been spreading unfriendly roomers and I wasn’t impressed with this morning’s either! Explain!” “Well, uh, miss, I..I..I’m on my way to detention,” he said with a glum look on his face. “That’s right little mister! Keep walking!” snapped his teacher. But Mark didn’t go to detention, he went to……………..the cafeteria. He hid there until lunch. After lunch, Karen’s class had a Valentines Day Party. Karen and Terence shared their cookies and juice then they turned up the music and danced like crazy. © Copyright 2006 by First Financial Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. Chapter 7 Mary Ann Strikes “I have to find a way to make Terence like me,” Mary Ann said to herself after school “I know! I’ll write a letter to Terence and say I don’t like him! But here’s the catch, I’ll pretend it’s from Karen! It’s genius!” When she got home, Mary Ann wrote a letter in her best cursive: Dear Terence, I am sorry to report that….. Dear Terence, I would like to tell you….. “ No, that’s not it,” and into the trash can it went. “No!” She went on like this until her trash can was over flowing. It went over the sides and under the desk and dresser. She finally wrote the perfect letter. © Copyright 2006 by First Financial Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. Dear Terence, I don’t want to hurt your feelings but we have to move on. The good news is that I know of a girl you might be interested in. Her name is Mary Ann and she is very pretty, sweet, and never tells lies. You did something to hurt my feelings and I never want to see you again. Sincerely, Karen Mary Ann sent the letter feeling pretty good about herself. I don’t know why. © Copyright 2006 by First Financial Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. Chapter 8 Mary ann’s Plan Foiled Terence received the letter and met Karen at her locker at school the next day. “I got your letter and if you want to break up, I’m cool with that.” “What letter? Break up? Why? I don’t want to break up with you! Do you want to break up with me?” exploded Karen. “But you said in your letter that I should go with Mary Ann,” said Terence. “I never wrote a letter!” yelled Karen “Yes you did!” yelled Terence. “I never want to see you again!” yelled Karen. Mary Ann was hiding and watching. When she heard this she jumped up and cheered, “Yes! The letter worked!” “Why are we fighting? It’s a dumb letter!” said Karen “Friends?” “Friends,” said Terence “Nooooooo!” wailed Mary Ann “My plan is ruined!” © Copyright 2006 by First Financial Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. Chapter 9 Blue Moon It was May 20th, Karen’s birthday, and boy was it a good one. Every one was having a great time eating spice cake, playing Twister, dancing, and talking. Then every one went horse back riding. After the party Karen’s dad took Karen to a breeding stable. He said, “We have the money and Sonya is in good condition, so with your permission, we’re going to breed her with Blue Moon.” “How can I say no!” said Karen. “Well Mr. Snider,” said Karen’s dad “What time will you be planning to come over?” “Lets say……3:00?” said Mr. Snider. “Deal,” said Karen’s dad. The next day, Mr. Snider came over with Blue Moon and the breeding was soon over. They ate together, slept together, ran outside together, and shared the same stall. They were inseparable. One night, Mr. Snider came over to see how Blue Moon was doing. “Tonight’s a blue moon, don’t let Blue Moon run off,” he said “He wouldn’t run off,” thought Karen “Would he?” © Copyright 2006 by First Financial Systems, Inc. She jumped out of bed, changed clothes, ran down stairs right into her dad! “Whoa! Karen where are you going?!” he asked. “Blue Moon is escaping with Sonya!” said Karen quickly. “Well let’s go then! We have to catch those horses!” said Karen’s dad “Get in the truck!” They drove all night but never found the horses. The next day, they hung up lost posters and handed out fliers. Karen became very worried. “What if they don’t come back?” she asked. “They will,” said her dad, but he sounded more sure than he felt. Later that day, Mr. Snider came over with a horse trailer. “These animals wouldn’t be yours would they?” he said. “Thank you soooooo much Mr. Snider!” said Karen. “No problem,” he said “Don’t forget to lock the stall door.” “Oops.” © Copyright 2006 by First Financial Systems, Inc. Chapter 11 Rocky “The foal is expected May 12th,” said Jake looking at the papers. “I know,” said Karen “I already looked at the papers.” Karen was reading a book and wasn’t paying much attention to Jake’s remarks. The book was called A Foal is Born by Laura Guise, one of Karen’s favorite authors. “Do you think it will be a boy?” asked Jake. “Hard to tell, it could be a girl too,” said Karen. “We’ll find out soon, the vet did an ultrasound,” Jake replied. Then the door bell rang. DING DONG! It was Mr. Snider. “I brought the results!” he called “It’s a boy!” “Yes!” said Jake. After dinner, Karen went out to the stable an gave Blue Moon and Sonya each a carrot. “Congratulations Sonya,” said Karen “It’s a boy!” A week later, Sonya had her foal. He was a bright chestnut color and had a white star on his forehead. Karen named him Rocky. “I’m going to call Terence,” said Karen. She ran to the house, dialed the number, 343-4657, and waited. “Hi Terence! Say, I want you to come over and see some thing.” “What is it?” “Rocky.” “What?” “Sonya’s foal! He’s real cute.” “I’ll be right over! Bye!” “Bye!” Karen hung up and ran back out side. When Terence arrived, Karen showed Terence Rocky. He curiously sniffed Terence’s hand. “I think he likes me!” exclaimed Terence. “No doubt about it!” said Karen. “I like him too,” said Terence. © Copyright 2006 by First Financial Systems, Inc. Boys were all over her but her stubborn and sassy personality prevented them from impressing her. Jake didn’t care what people said, he liked her and didn’t want people to know, especially Kate. Everyone knew that Jake and Kate, Karen’s best friend, liked each other a lot. Jake knew that if Kate found out she would be furious. Jake hated to do this to Kate but the new girl was so pretty! He later learned that her name was Cortney Blaire. Karen diagnosed him with Cortney Fever. She said it was a rare disease found only in immature males. The only cure was a whack and some prune juice. Jake said he would rather be infected with a disease. Who could blame him? One day, Kate saw Jake giving Cortney flowers and chocolates. “Jake!” she said “What are you doing?” “Giving me stuff, du!” said Cortney. “Well I highly object!” said Kate. “Back off loser!” sassed Cortney. “You go sweetie!” said Jake. “Uhhhhhhh! I hate you!” she shouted, then she stormed off. “How could Jake just dump me like that?” she said to her self “I thought he liked me.” Just then, Cortney’s sister Kathren walked by and saw Kate crying. “What’s wrong?” she asked. “I can’t believe that Jake dumped me for that…that, Cortney,” said Kate. “My sister again! That’s the 50th case this month! My sister has been tearing up relationships by be-friending the boy, leaving the girl in the dust, breaking up with the boy, and never getting the two back together,” said Kathren. “She sounds pretty bad,” said Kate. “You don’t have to live with her,” replied Kathren. “How could I be so rude!” said Kathren “I’m Kathren.” “Kate,” said Kate. “Listen, I know how to get you and Jake back together,” said Kathren. “You do?” said Kate. “Trust me,” said Kathren. © Copyright 2006 by First Financial Systems, Inc.
