Title: Animal Care Management Position This position is responsible for management of one of three zoo-wide husbandry teams with multitaxic responsibilities. Current responsibilities include waterfowl, lemurs, condor, alpaca, capybara, jaguar, bats, snow leopards, constrictors, tropical frogs, tahr, and deer. A current expansion project may add additional animals and/or change the team’s collection. The zoo is also preferentially seeking a candidate that has avian experience, and this position will act as taxon specialist assisting other members of the curatorial staff with their collections. Duties: Reports to the Director of Animal Operations. Supervision, training, and evaluation of keepers. Works with senior keeper to direct work of team Insures that standard operation procedures, policies, and exhibit servicing guidelines are followed appropriately. Monitors exhibit status to determine needs for repairs and improvements. Provides input on the construction of new animal exhibits. Insures that behavioral needs of the collection are met via enrichment and training. Communicates effectively to husbandry team and Director of Animal Operations. Works cooperatively with other husbandry teams, vet hospital, and other zoo departments to accomplish mutual goals. Maintains effective communication with other professionals in field. Serves as IR for various SSP/red program species. Participates in collection planning and acquisition/disposition processes. Insures effective and appropriate containment of collection animals. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Biological sciences is strongly preferred. Life experience will be considered in evaluating candidates. Prior experience with zoo facilities and operations, including diet, containment, dangerous animal protocols, animal and staff safety, animal handling, etc. Prior “ hand-on” experience directing or supervising the work of keeping staff. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with staff, supervisors, other departments, and professional colleagues. Good mechanical abilities. Candidate will need to be able to specify repairs to contractors, and conduct and supervise basic exhibit repairs and construction.
