PROJECT SUMMARY
example
This remediation project has been initiated primarily to provide SEB offset credits (6.085ha) for vegetation
clearance at the current Mount Jagged Overtaking Lane site (3.0825ha offset debit) and the proposed (but
now postponed indefinitely) Mount Compass Overtaking Lane (duplication) project.
The proposed remediation project is situated on an undeveloped road corridor south of and parallel to
Nangkita Road approximately 5 km east of Mount Compass. The road corridor roughly follows the south side
of the main northern tributary and associated swamps of Tookayerta Creek, which originates west of Mount
Compass. A man made drain constructed in the early part of the 1900’s to drain swampy land occupies part
of the eastern end of the road corridor.
The road corridor is in the care and control of Alexandrina Council and the proposed project is supported by
its Natural Resources Management Officer.
The corridor is fenced on its southern side but generally unfenced on its northern side adjoining 19 small
allotments fronting Nangkita and Waterfall Roads. It is approximately 3.7km long by 20 metres wide (30
metres in some sections) and covers an area of approximately 7.5 ha.
The road reserve contains scattered remnants of Eucalyptus baxteri low open woodland (mainly single and
small groups of trees) with some remnant understorey and associated tree species in a widespread ground
stratum dominated by Pteridium esculentum (Bracken) and Ehrharta calycina (Perennial Veldt Grass) with
significant infestations of Rubus fruticosus (Blackberry), Senecio pterophorus (African Daisy), Cytisus
scoparius (English Broom) and Ulex europaeus (Gorse). Some private revegetation (with local species and
provenances) has been carried in the corridor in the last decade.
The proposed remediation project involves eradication of many of the main weed species, followed by
fencing of the northern boundary and revegetation with trees, mid level shrub stratum species and some of
the more robust of the smaller heathy understorey species.
Intensive weed control will be carried out in the better remnant vegetation areas, approximately 2.814 ha.
Selective weed control will be carried out in the proposed revegetation area of 2.352ha and adjoining areas
(such as those with some existing revegetation) of a further 0.626ha, for a total offset works area of 6.058ha,
plus fencing of approximately 3735 linear metres. The proposed project timeframe is from June 2006 (weed
control works commence) to June 2009, with revegetation to be carried out in mid 2007.
The proposed works are expected to have significant general biodiversity value, particularly as a fauna and
avifauna corridor linking existing remnant woodland patches and swamps along the Tookayerta Creek
tributary. This includes specific potential benefit in providing heathy woodland movement corridors for small
threatened populations of Mount Lofty Ranges Southern Emu-Wren which have been recorded occasionally
in swamp remnants along the creek tributary. There is also potential for further future works in adjoining
contiguous undeveloped road reserve in the care and control of Alexandrina Council, which extends west
from Willowburn Drive to link with significant Emu-Wren habitat swamps at Mount Compass.

The proposed northern extension of the Mount Jagged lane is located on an undulating plain of low relief in
the Mount Compass Environmental Association (3.2.10). Soils of the area range from imperfectly drained
yellow duplex to well-drained red duplex soils (Laut et al. 1977).
Vegetation of the area has been extensively cleared, with the Hundred of Goolwa retaining 12.6% and the
Mount Compass Environmental Association retaining 13.3% of remnant vegetation (DEH 2002). Much of the
road reserve contains remnant Eucalyptus baxteri / E.fasciculosa / E. cosmophylla Low Woodland over
Xanthorrhea semiplana and Acacia spp and a Baumea spp. / Ghania sieberiana / Phragmites australis
Closed Sedgeland.

BUSHCARE and WEED CONTROL
Weed control is designated for 3 zones which are distributed throughout the whole site as follows:
ZONE A is the 'Bushcare/Remnant' zone of 2.814 ha, which generally consists of patches of disturbed
remnant vegetation scattered throughout the site, with the most significant area at the western end of the site
near Willowburn Drive. Intensive weed control is required to these areas, using low disturbance bushcare
techniques and avoiding off-target damage. Refer to site plans for locations.
ZONE B is the planting zone of 2.352 ha, which generally consists of more open areas along the corridor,
often dominated by bracken or perennial veldt grass. 3000 plants are to be planted in this zone. Complete
weed control is required to the planting zones, covering the whole area for group plantings and a buffer
around each plant for scattered plantings. Bracken control will be required close to plants. Off-target damage
is to be avoided.
ZONE C is the selective weed control zone of 3.244 ha, which includes the planting zone B and as well as
adjacent areas which may contain scattered remnant vegetation, mainly trees, and existing revegetation
plantations by adjoining landowners. Specific weeds are to be controlled in this zone, including woody weeds
but generally excluding grassy pasture species. The effective size of this zone, excluding zone B, is 0.892
ha.
Weed control in or adjacent to watercourses is restricted to cultural control methods or the use of 'bi-active'
Glyphosate herbicide.

Fencing will be required to most of the northern boundary of the road reserve, to exclude grazing animals.
The southern boundary of the road reserve is continuously fenced. A number of gates may be required in
this southern fence if access through the property to the south is negotiated. Sections of existing fence
crossing the road reserve at the boundaries of adjoining properties should be removed once construction of
the northern boundary fence is completed.
10.
MANAGEMENT (establishment and maintenance period)
Following planting and initial weed control and bushcare, the site will be maintained by intensive control of
weeds around plants, intensive bushcare follow-up to remnant vegetation patches and selective weed
control to the balance of the area as detailed above. No watering is planned for the plantings, but will be
provided in the case of prolonged or extreme drought conditions. Tree guards will be removed from plants
after approximately 12 months, depending on species, growth and the threat of grazing by kangaroos and
rabbits. This threat is expected to be variable in different parts of the corridor. Maintenance will continue until
handover to Alexandrina Council at the end of June 2009.
