A pre planned meeting was held on Thursday 12th November 2009 at 11:00 am at Institute of
Quality and Technology Management (IQTM) under Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC). The
meeting was scheduled between Director QEC and Faculty of Arts & Humanities, University of the
Punjab, Lahore.

The meeting started with the recitation of Holy Quran.
The agenda of the meeting was the group discussion on implementing self assessment activities at
university of the Punjab, Lahore.
Prof. Dr. Aamir Ijaz, Director QEC briefed Faculty of Arts & Humanities about the activities of QEC
at PU regarding efforts towards implementation of self assessment manual (SAM). The copies of
SAM had already been distributed to all the faculty members.
Dr. Farzand Masih (Chairman Department of Archaeology) said that there is lack of interest to
implement SAM and suggested that program team members and assessment team members in
each department for completing SAM and auditing should be given some incentives either in some
form of remuneration or reduction in their teaching load.
Miss Shamaila Dodhy (Department of English Language & Literature) suggested that their should
be a regular monitoring and feedback of the progress about implementation of SAM because her
department was waiting for audit of their SAM for about last one year.
Dr. Shahida Manzoor (Research Centre, University College of Arts & Design) said that initially
College of Arts & Design (Research Centre) was a separate department and therefore, University
College of Arts & Design Principal should be asked to nominate the new program team members.
Miss. Beenish Tahir (Textile Department, Punjab University College of Arts & Design) pointed out
that there is a difference between annual and semester systems of examination but whereas the
present format of SAM provided by HEC is prepared on the basis of semester system.
Dr. Nasir Saeed Butt (Senior Faculty Members, Quality Assurance Advisor) further pointed out that
the present format of SAM seems more oriented towards Engineering disciplines; and requested
that we should ask HEC for preparing a revised SAM, which would work for all the disciplines
equally. At this point, all the members agreed that SAM should be users friendly and simple; so
that departments like Arabic, Urdu and Islamiat etc can also follow the instructions and standards
of SAM.
All the members agreed with the above discussed points and asked the Director, QEC to write
HEC about this discrepancy and prepare a common SAM which could work for both of the
systems.

Mr. Maqbool Ahmad Awan (Department of History) asked the question that what is the output or
advantage of the doing all this laborious exercise of completing SAM.
Dr. Farzand Masih answered to his question that the aim of SAM by HEC is to bring the level of
Education to International level.
Dr. Nasir Saeed Butt also added to his question of benefits of SAM exercise is to prepare syllabi
and courses according to one standard all over the country in different areas and to raise the level
of quality of education in all the disciplines.
Miss Shamaila Dodhy pointed out that in their previous SAM for Department of English Language
and Literature. They raised their requirements shortcoming and requested to upgrade the
infrastructure and labs by providing financial assistant. She further added regretfully that nothing is
done in this regard so far.
Dr. Aamir Ijaz said that it is the major aim of SAM; very soon we will convey these requests of
different departments to Worthy Vice Chancellor of Punjab University after auditing each
department’s SAM. Hopefully, the requests would be answered.
All the members requested to Director, QEC to send soft copy of SAM prepared by IQTM to
Faculty of Arts & Humanities. Director, QEC accepted their request and asked Admin Officer of
QEC to email audited SAM report of Institute of Quality and Technology Management to all the
departments.
Dr. Aamir Ijaz said that Mr. Muhammad Abdullah (Admin Officer, QEC) would visit to PT’s of each
department in future and try to solve their queries on spot with the help of Director, QEC.
The meeting ended with the vote of thanks from the Director, QEC.
