Use of the Benchmark Books 1. Administer the Flynt and Cooter (see Flynt/Cooter RIC abbreviated directions). 2. Establish an instructional level. 3. Choose from among the benchmark books at the student’s instructional level (i.e. second grade books that range from Level 18 to 28). 4. Take a running record of the student’s oral reading of approximately 100 words from one of the benchmark books at the student’s instructional level (i.e. second grade). 5. Place the student at the highest level of benchmark books where the running record indicates 90 to 95%. 6. If benchmark books are not available, try finding a trade book from the leveled lists at: http://registration.beavton.k12.or.us/lbdb/ http://www.pps.k12.or.us/curriculum/literacy/leveled_books/ 7. Use of the benchmark books will help you to find the most discrete or specific level that is instructional for the student you are assessing.
