School of Chemical and Process Engineering Course Representative 2015/16 Course Representative - Volunteer Form The School runs a Student Staff Forum (SSF) that meets formally five times a year to consider student ideas and concerns. This is an opportunity for students to raise general concerns and course-related matters. Any matters raised are subsequently considered by the School Taught Student Education Committee and, if necessary, forwarded to other Committees for consideration and action. Representatives from the SSF are also invited to join the School Taught Student Education Committee (STSEC). What is a Course Rep? Course Reps are students who want to help make their course better. Course Reps have a specific group of students who they work with to do this i.e. their programme groups. Course Reps are often given different titles across the University to reflect their constituents such as Module Rep, Peer Rep, Student Rep or Programme Reps. What does a Course Rep do? They collect information by listening to student’s views. They attend Student Staff Forum and relay the views of the students they represent. They report back to students any useful feedback or outcomes from the forum. They work with the School Rep to take issues higher than course level when necessary. What are the benefits? The opportunity to make your course better. The opportunity to improve your skills and build confidence. Training and support from your Union and School Rep. We aim to recruit one rep per programme in each year, or for smaller programmes we will recruit one rep per programme to represent all years. If we receive more volunteers than we need, we will have a vote/election. If this is necessary, details will follow by email. This is a really good opportunity to present your views and the views of your peers, to influence School decision making and to enhance your non-academic CV. Who you represent: Students on your course. How you represent them in 3 simple steps: 1. You start by consulting students on your course. You do this by actively seeking their views on decisions that affect them - as well as listening to any issues that they are facing. 2. Then you speak on their behalf when decisions are being made at the Student Staff Forums and other meetings within the University. You also present their views to your School Rep to feed into other meetings. 3. Finally, you let students on your course know the outcome of the meeting within a reasonable timeframe. You are responsible to students on your course who hold you to account by directly communicating with you before and after Student Staff Forum meetings. You hold to account School Reps through their monthly drops-ins and emails. You also work with: Your School Rep – who you meet with regularly to relay the views of students on your course and share key information. Other Course Reps – who you have regular communication with to share views and ideas. You are supported to do this by: LUU Student Engagement Coordinators who provide you with training and by supporting School Reps to work with you more effectively. University Student Support Staff who support your recruitment process as well as providing you with information regarding meetings in your school. Time commitment This role will take approximately 2 hours per week. During this time you might be at meetings, talking to students and/ or doing research. There will normally be more work during term time than in the holidays. Gain experience of working on education issues, networking and campaigning. Representation is featured as part of Leeds for Life as a co-curricular activity, allowing you to learn and develop skills. As a volunteer you will be eligible for various accreditations such as the National V50 award, and will have access to a wide range of training.
