His works have frequently formed a major part of the festival repertoire and so the analysis of his symphonies is a logical consequence of our work and what we consider to be our mission. In the opening concert on 10 July 2014 Bruckner’s Te Deum – mentioned by the composer as a complement to his unfinished Ninth Symphony – will be performed together with Helgoland, his last completed work but hardly known. In the morning concerts on the first three festival Sundays we present cyclical companions to Wagner’s Ring. Bruckner’s Seventh, Eighth and Ninth Symphonies are musically so influenced by the sound of the Ring that Bruckner no longer wanted to dispense with the Wagner tubas. Palestrina’s compositional technique amalgamates with the specific sound of a tuba as intended by Richard Wagner. For the first time ever in summer 2014 both festival halls, the Passionsspielhaus and the Festspielhaus, will be used as performance venues – this will be particularly beneficial for chamber music. The multifaceted and entertaining series of concerts is presented this year in the Festspielhaus from 14 July 2014 from Monday to Thursday (apart from 30 July 2014) and the exceptional acoustics are expected to enhance the performance of chamber music. The programme presents many well-known groups and artists who enjoy crossing between classical, jazz and folk music in their own individual way and featuring their own preferences and enthusiasms. The outstanding pianist Jasminca Stančul gives a recital as does her equally esteemed colleague Davide Cabassi who with his friends can be counted on to present musical surprises, for instance by playing three Mozart piano concerts in a chamber music constellation. Lucio Gallo and Emily Righter ensure entertaining evenings of jazz and blues –as Emily also did last summer in the completely sold out tavern Blaue Quelle where she enthralled jazz fans. Music formations such as ALMA, Eduardo Maffei and Band, Bluespension and Catch-Pop String-Strong present exciting crossover programmes mixing classical, jazz and folk music. This series of chamber music is really special and very many different sound constellations will benefit from the remarkable acoustics of the Festspielhaus. On the Friday and Saturday of the opening weekend both the Passionsspielhaus and the Festspielhaus merge to become a very special symbiosis of scenic and symphonic performances. To begin with, Gustav Kuhn’s staging of Béla Bartók’s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle – enthusiastically acclaimed at the ceremonial opening on 26 December 2012 – will be presented in the Festspielhaus, conducted by Tito Ceccherini. Immediately afterwards audiences can hear a performance of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana conducted by Gustav Kuhn in the Passionsspielhaus. On Thursday 31 July 2014 a special performance within the chamber music series presents a preliminary evening to the preliminary evening of the 24-Hour-Ring, during which the intention is very consciously to achieve creative friction: the most important motifs from Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen will be approached by two very different groups: male choir versus or with jazz combo. Eduardo Javier Maffei, saxophone player, composer and musician through and through, merges Wagner’s wealth of motifs with jazzy developments, whereas the male chorus of Götterdämmerung (Twilight of the Gods) transports the themes of the Ring into a new world of sound. 2|6 Ultimately the great event: in summer 2014 Wagner’s Ring will again be performed in twenty-four hours, this time especially to celebrate the 70th birthday of festival president Dr Hans Peter Haselsteiner – that’s why it’s also called the HPH-24-Hour-Ring. What can certainly be considered as one of the most important artistic successes in the history of the Tyrol Festival Erl will thus be presented in a scenically adapted new version. Ticket sales so far confirm that in the past 15 years Erl has established itself as a destination for Wagner pilgrims from all over the world: both Ring cycles are almost completely sold out. Those who are just beginning to get to know Wagner’s music, and young people aged between 10 and 18, as well as students and those doing military or community service pay only € 25 for any available seat for a visit to the opera: in summer 2014 the Tyrol Festival Erl is offering a single performance of Die Walküre on Wednesday 30 July 2014. Tickets are still available for this separate performance. Advance sales for all performances at the Tyrol Festival Erl 2014 begin on Friday 8 November 2013. Tickets can be booked simply and conveniently via our homepage www.tiroler-festspiele.at where you can also choose your desired seats, if they are still available, directly on the plan of the auditorium. You can of course still reserve tickets in the usual manner, for instance in the Festspielhaus in Erl or by telephone on the number: +43 5373 8100020 3|6 THE PROGRAMME OF THE SUMMER IN ERL AT A GLANCE OPERA Fri. 11 / Sat. 12 July, 7 p.m., Festspielhaus BÉLA BARTÓK Duke Bluebeard’s Castle Fri. 18 July, 7 p.m., Passionsspielhaus RICHARD WAGNER Das Rheingold Sat. 19 / Wed. 30 July, 5 p.m., Passionsspielhaus RICHARD WAGNER Die Walküre Fri. 25 July, 5 p.m., Passionsspielhaus RICHARD WAGNER Siegfried Sat. 26 July, 5 p.m., Passionsspielhaus RICHARD WAGNER Götterdämmerung Fri. 1 – Sun. 3 August, Passionsspielhaus HPH-24-HOUR-RING CONCERTS Thu. 10 July, 7 p.m., Festspielhaus OPENING Fri. 11 / Sat. 12 July, 9 p.m., Passionsspielhaus CARL ORFF Carmina Burana Sun. 13 July, 11 a.m., Festspielhaus ANTON BRUCKNER Symphony No. 7 Sun. 20 July, 11 a.m., Festspielhaus ANTON BRUCKNER Symphony No. 8 Sun. 27 July, 11 a.m., Festspielhaus ANTON BRUCKNER Symphony No. 9 4|6 CHAMBER MUSIC – FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE FESTSPIELHAUS! His works have frequently formed a major part of the festival repertoire and so the analysis of his symphonies is a logical consequence of our work. The remaining programme also has much to offer especially in the musical mix of folk music, classical and jazz in the series of chamber music concerts which take place for the first time in the Festspielhaus, exploring the fascinating possibilities offered by the exceptional acoustics. For the first time in summer 2014 performances are given in both festival halls in Erl – an idea manifested in particular on two evenings when Duke Bluebeard’s Castle is staged in the Festspielhaus and followed by a performance of Orff’s Carmina Burana in the Passionsspielhaus. (890 characters) In summer 2014 at the Tyrol Festival in Erl, as a cyclical complement to Wagner’s Ring the last three symphonies by Anton Bruckner will be performed. The programme also features a series of chamber music combining classical, jazz and folk music, presented for the first time in the Festspielhaus. On two evenings both festival halls will be used: Bartók’s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle in a staged production in the Festspielhaus is followed by Orff’s Carmina Burana in the Passionsspielhaus.
