Work Instruction: Ref: 2.5.2.4 Mini Bin Recycling 1. Title: Mini Bin Recycling 2. Purpose: The Mini Bin recycling system aims to reduce waste to landfill and increase recycling from Edith Cowan University (ECU )buildings by reducing the space available to dispose of waste to landfill and ensure recycling is made as easy as possible. 3. Scope: This Work Instruction predominantly pertains to staff on all Edith Cowan University campuses who work in an office environment. 4. Definition/s: Mini Bin: Refers to a small specially made receptacle that may be placed on or underneath the desk used to deposit general waste. 5. Process: 5.1 Building selection The Mini Bin system is implemented in all new buildings, existing building refurbishments and anywhere where staff are moving location in large numbers. Mini bins are substituted for normal desk side bins in the new location. In existing buildings the system should be implemented on an ongoing basis, building-bybuilding with priority being given to those buildings with the most occupants. 5.2 Communication Communication of the changes is a very important part of the process. Prior to commencement of the rollout, an email should be sent to the Faculty Manager(s) or Director(s) of the Administrative Centre occupying the target building, outlining the system and requesting to hold a meeting (over morning/afternoon tea) with staff. Communication with the Green Office Rep and any other interested parties should continue throughout the entire process ensuring that any concerns are dealt with promptly and that a smooth transition is made. 2.5.2.4 Mini Bin Recycling All printed copies are uncontrolled. Page 1 of 3 As at July 2008 Issue 1 5.3 Rollout The rollout should be planned using the attached recycling plan. Communications should be planned using the recycling plan. The system is introduced and explained to staff during a half hour morning/afternoon tea. The system consists of the mini bin used for general waste, the paper recycling box used for paper and the co-mingled recycling bins placed in central locations to collect bottles, cans etc. Staff are responsible for emptying their own paper recycling box into central wheelie bins. Cleaners empty the mini bins and co-mingled bins daily. The paper recycling boxes are available from the Cleaning contractors and may be requested using contacting the F&S Call Centre (Ext.5554). Co-mingled bins are flip-top bins that must have recycling stickers on the front and lid. These bins are generally placed in kitchenettes. 5.4 Review It is important to maintain communications with appropriate staff (ie the Green Office Representatives) after the initial rollout to ensure that any problems or complaints that arise are dealt with promptly. Contacting the Cleaning Supervisor after a couple of weeks to get an idea of the amount of recycling that is coming out of the area will give an idea of the success of the program. A follow-up email or morning tea with staff should be conducted every six months or so depending upon the feedback from Cleaning staff and Green Office Repsresentatives Waste audits may be undertaken to assess the waste profile for more accurate results. 6. Environmental Aspects: Implicit within this Work Instruction 7. Risk Assessment: No risks identified. 8. Records: Relevant legal and other requirements will be recorded within the Environmental Risk and Compliance Register. The environmental requirements with which Facilities and Services must comply will be reviewed at least every 12 months or as required. The date of the latest review will be listed on the Environmental Risk and Compliance Register. The Register can be found under U:/Environmental Systems/Risk and Compliance 2.5.2.4 Mini Bin Recycling All printed copies are uncontrolled. Page 2 of 3 As at July 2008 Issue 1 9.
