New roof paint provides large energy savings ClimateCooler lowers the temperature on the roof of the building thereby reducing energy consumption required for air conditioning. Many businesses, offices, institutions, hotels and shopping centres can now achieve very large savings in energy consumption for air conditioning simply by painting the roof. This is thanks to a new type of roof paint that reflects up to 70 percent of the rays of the sun, thereby creating a cooler air temperature above the roof where most often the air conditioning unit is located. Consequently, the air does not have to be cooled as much as before. At the same time, a cooler underroof is created, reducing the temperature in the premises immediately under the roof. The new roof paint is called ClimateCooler and has been developed by Iso Paint Nordic in Lunderskov. The paint is unique because it effectively reflects the rays of the sun thereby reducing the temperature of the roof by up to 30C. Measurements carried out by Dansk Bygningstermografi [Danish Construction Thermography] on the roof of the Clarion Hotel in Copenhagen document the effects of the paint. The calculations show that ClimateCooler will provide the hotel with an annual energy saving of 4050.000 kWh. This corresponds to 27 metric tons of CO2 or 170,000 km of driving in a car. The lower temperature on the roof also extends the service life of the roof by several years as decomposition takes place at a slower pace. The new ClimateCooler roof paint consists of 3 layers. First a primer containing, which among other things include some special insulating chemical pigments. Next there are two layers of top paint with the new active solar-reflective and thermally stable pigments. Adhesive capacity and flexibility are particularly good even on difficult surfaces, while the finished surface acquires self-cleaning properties. Consequently, ClimateCooler offers optimal protection for the roof against sun, rain and frost. ClimateCooler is available in eight different colours, and the finished roof will have exactly the same appearance as a roof with traditional roof paint. Two versions are available: one for roofs of concrete, brick, fibre cement and similar, and another for roofs with asphalted roofing-board. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Iso Paint Nordic are collaborating in order to protect nature by putting a curb on global warming, and this cooperation is financially supported by using ClimateCooler. ClimateCooler is slightly more expensive than traditional roof paints, but an excellent investment in the long term.
