Ideas and Development (Composite Weight-30%)
Extensive development of several ideas (or one important main idea) with
extension and elaboration on all or most of the points. Look for uniqueness, interest
to audience, and strong supporting details. Writing is exceptional or extremely
thorough. Writer accurately quotes or paraphrases evidence.
Clear ideas address the topic and are adequately supported with some details
extended or elaboration. Writer attempts to quote or paraphrase evidence.
Weak ideas minimally supported with little or no extension of details. May simply
be a list of ideas.
Attempts to address topic but ideas are vague or difficult to understand. Ideas lack
development or may be repetitive.
Organization, Unity, and Coherence (Composite Weight-25%)
Completely organized with a smooth flow from one idea to the next through the use
of transitions and sequencing. Unity is strongly evident with no wandering from the
primary focus theme or plan. Introduction and conclusion are clear and strong.
Fairly well organized with good unity of plan. Some transitions are used. Little or
no digression from the main ideas. Introduction and conclusion are not well
developed; may lack conclusion.
Small amount of organization. Weak plan that is not well unified. Ideas are only
minimally connected. Missing introduction and/or conclusion.
Lack of plan or coherence.
Word Choice (Composite Weight-15%)
Precise, appropriate, accurate, and specific word choices convey the correct
meaning and appeal to the audience. Many words are vivid and imaginative.
Word choices are generally appropriate and specific. Meaning is clear; some words
show “sparkle” (vivid language).
Word choices are basic, simplistic and/or vague. Word choices are limited.
Word choices make meaning unclear or inappropriate.
Sentences & Paragraphs (Composite Weight-15%)
Excellent control and formation of sentences. Variety of sentence structure, type,
and length contribute to fluency and interest. Paragraphs used where appropriate.
Writing has few or no run-on or fragment errors.
Adequate control of sentence formation. Some mix of sentence types, lengths, and
structures. Writing may contain a few run-on or fragment errors that do not
interfere with fluency. Shows some attempt at paragraphing.
Inconsistent sentence construction. Little variety in type, length or structure.
Sentences contain several errors and lack control (rambling, wordy, choppy).
Shows no attempt at paragraphing.
Poor sentence structure with many errors that inhibit fluency or clarity. Lacks the
control necessary for clear communication.
