The Gray Oral Reading Test – Fourth Edition (GORT – 4) is an individually
administered test measuring oral reading rate, accuracy, fluency, and
comprehension. The overall reading score is reported as a quotient. This is a
statistical score with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15 points. The
average score for this assessment is 90 – 110.
The Rate composite measures the time, (in seconds), “Student” needed to
read each passage. “Student” earned a SS= on this composite, falling within the
average range.
The Accuracy composite of the test measures “Student” ability to pronounce
the words in the story correctly. His SS= falls at the high end of the average range.
The Fluency composite is compiled by combining the Rate and Accuracy
composites, illustrating how well or how fluently, “Student” read the selection.

The Test of Written Language – Third Edition (TOWL-3) is an inclusive
assessment measuring several components of written language which are later
combined to form three composite scores Contrived Writing, Spontaneous Writing,
and Overall Writing. The composites are reported as quotients, with average scores
ranging from 90 – 110 with a standard deviation of 15 points. The subtests have an
average range of 8 – 12 with a standard deviation of 3 points.
The Contrived Writing composite measures the smallest units of written
discourse that include spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and word usage.
The Spontaneous Writing composite measures functional writing ability as
related to an actual passage.
The final composite of this assessment, Overall Writing, combines all the
subtests and provides an overall quotient related to writing achievement.
