Medieval Banquet Day Choice 1: Food What was a typical diet during Medieval times? What kind of snacks did they enjoy? What did the knights eat to prepare for battle? Prepare a menu for a typical banquet at court (it should look Medieval). Cook a dish or two or bring snacks for us to sample. Be as authentic as possible. Choice 2: Games During Medieval times jousting and other games were an important part of social life. Dancing around the Maypole was an important ritual to welcome spring. Look for games that children played that we can quickly learn; create a simple board game that you can recreate; look for dances that you can teach us. Show and tell us what they did for fun! Choice 3: Clothing and Accessories How did the knights dress? What did a suit of armor or a mail tunic look like? What was the courtly dress of a typical damsel? When a knight carried his lady’s favor into battle, what would it most likely be? What about weapons? (tin foil and cardboard examples are fine; don’t get in trouble!) Create a medieval fashion magazine and your very own coat of arms. Why not dress the part on festival day? Choice 4: The Plague Give us details-hype it up like the media! Extra, Extra, read all about it! How many died throughout Europe? Where did it start? How many different plagues were there? What were the symptoms? Any precautions? How were bodies disposed of? Write a short newsletter (it should look Medieval) sharing this information with us (as if we were the concerned medieval public). Choice 5: The Carrollton Tales Write the introduction to our class’ Carrollton Tales (16 line min). It must be in couplet form. Include at least the three- five students in the group and (12 line min for each “pilgrim”)create one tale to be shared with the class at the banquet (entertaining and a moral). Gather this together to type and create the book of The Carrollton Tales complete with a cover, index and editor info (to give your self credit, of course!) Choice 6: The Ballads Got any musical talent? (Real musical talent?!) Why not write your own ballad to perform? It could be a fictional medieval ballad or a modern day ballad. It must include some of the characteristics of ballad that we studied in class, and you must perform it for the class. No talent? OR Find 2 modern day ballads from 2 different genres of music (rap, country, metal, pop, classic rock, etc…). Write a brief summary of the ballad & identify the characteristics of ballad within the summary. Be prepared to play the songs to the class on CD or cassette (must be school appropriate & approved by Mrs. Lyons in advance!) ALL GROUPS MAY HAVE 3-5 MEMBERS. More people = Higher expectations! Some work may have to be done outside of class. Oh no, homework! ALL completed products are due for presentation in class on Thursday, Sept 27th! Group members need to make sure that whoever is present is able to present (nice homograph? Present-in attendance/present-give a presentation to the class) What about a grade? Yea, Yea…I’ll have a rubric for you soon enough! Ever thought of giving effort & learning just because?
