Lod Science Comprehensive High School Entrance Exam Requirements of Instruction, Learning and Assessment Aimed at equipping pupils with the knowledge of English that the modern world demands. Students are expected to gain the following standards (knowledge and language abilities) in each domain of language learning: Social Interaction, Access to Information, Presentation and Appreciation of Literature, Culture and Language. Intermediate Level II Performance Tasks /Activities/ that will enable students to achieve standards I. Social Interaction Pupils use English fluently and appropriately to the social situation, using basic language structures accurately II.Access to Information Pupils obtain and use information from longer oral and written texts that are linguistically more complex & that deal with concepts and topics that are new to them III. Presentation Pupils present ideas fluently, orally and in writing, dealing with general topics. Role-Plays, E-mail and Snail Correspondence, Peer-GroupClass Discussions, Interviews, Debate Reading and Listening Comprehension: Sources: textbooks, newspaper&magazine articles (both paper & on-line), web material (incl. search engines), radio & TV broadcasts (incl. news) Projects, Book Reports, Portfolio, Essays, Monologues, Debate Pupils use basic language structures and suitable vocabulary both orally and in writing, with few errors in a variety of formats. IV.Appreciation of Literature Pupils interpret literature in English appropriate to their age and interests Culture Pupils become Novels, Poems, Stories-ReadingDiscussion-Portfolio Work & other related activities acquainted with cultural norms Projects and behaviors in a variety of cultures and Language Vocabulary, Grammar and Pupils are aware of differences between English and their mother tongue Dictionary work (e.g.using Oxford Elementary Dictionary English-English-Hebrew Kerneman Publishing-Lonnie Kahn&CO) To achieve the above mentioned standards in the four domains of language learning students should develop the following abilities . I. Social Interaction Students will achieve the standards if they are able to a) ask &answer questions (mind word order in questions & statements) to gather and share personal information & opinions on past, current and future events (e.g.talking about themselves, their families, likes and dislikes, the home, daily routine, feelings, making plans, computers) b) express personal wishes and opinions about general topics such as current events, the weather, the seasons, holidays, friendship, etc..) c) Give and follow directions & instructions d) converse fluently on familiar topics (e.g.books, movies, television programs, the neighbourhood, school, food, hobbies, leisure time) e) give and receive information in the context, orally or in writing, in person or by e-mail (e.g. being able to write a letter to your pen-pal abroad telling about yourself, hobbies, leisure, family, being able to respond to her/her letter, expressing your opinion about the topics discussed) II. Access to Information Students will achieve the standards if they are able to a) understand punctuation marks and simple discourse markers (e.g.capitalization, full stop, inverted commas, comma, apostrophe, question mark, exclamation mark) and how they affect the meaning of the text / foundation level b) use knowledge of simple grammatical structures (e.g. Present & Past Simple & Progressive Tenses, Future Simple, etc.) in order to get a more accurate understanding of a text c) understand the main & supporting details of a text d) use information tools, such as a learner's dictionary (e.g. Oxford Elementary Dictionary English-English-Hebrew Kerneman Publishing-Lonnie Kahn&CO, a spell ckecker) e) identify the points of view in a text , distinguishing fact from opinion & being able to identify the sequence of events in a text , as well as true and false information III. The Domain of Presentation Students will achieve the standards if they are able to a) write and print legibly b) compare and contrast information from various sources, such as the Internet, newspaper publications using different means of presentation (e.g. visual aids, OHPs, posters, etc.) c) express ideas and opinions bout familiar topics and experiences using main and supporting ideas with use of basic language structures and suitable vocabulary (e.g.Simple and Progressive Tenses, Modals and Semi-Modals, Manner Adverbs, Stative verbs, Adjectives with the suffixes ed-& -ing , Degrees of Comparison of Adjectives) IV. Appreciation of Literature & Culture Students will achieve the standards if they are able to a) discuss favorite or recently read books, writers and films b) express opinions about books, writers and films c) refer stories or/and books read to their own/or real life experiences d) discuss themes and topics in the story e) read books for enjoyment and not only for book reports f) discuss and compare social traditions in different cultures V.
