St. Clair St. The Zoot Theatre Company will host a behind-the-scenes theatrical and musical event at The Ohio Coffee Co. starting at 7 p.m. to preview Moby Dick, Zoot’s puppet and mask show that will take place at the Schuster Performing Arts Center on April 23-25. Zoot members will demonstrate how they design, create and perform with the puppets and masks in the company’s productions, as well as exhibit puppets and masks from past shows. Acoustic act The Esther Caufield Orchestra will perform, and The Ohio Coffee Co. will feature a clam chowder and a latte specially made for the event. Starting at 5:30 p.m. at the 2nd Street Market, Ramon from Ice Sculptures by Ramon will carve a mermaid out of ice using power tools and the skills that have made him one of the Top 10 ice sculptors in the United States. The market also will feature musical entertainment by Dave Greer and the Classic Jazz Stompers, a wine sampling, and artist demonstrations. The market will be open until 8 p.m. Open from 5 to 8 p.m., the Dayton Visual Arts Center (DVAC) will host the closing of the exhibition “Something This Way Comes,” featuring the tornado-themed sculpture and paintings of Michael Bashaw and Jeff Regensburger, and the opening of the “Cline Show: All-Area University Exhibit,” which runs until March 20. ― more ― March First Friday, page 2 In the Oregon Arts District, Gallery 510 Fine Art will host an opening reception for the exhibit “Tiny Travels,” featuring work by artist Janet Oliver of Erie, Colo., who will give a gallery talk at 7 p.m. To create the work in the exhibit, Oliver tore up her old monotype prints into postcard-sized pieces, then created new drawings inspired by her travels through France and Austria. Oliver evaluated the existing prints for clues about where to begin a new drawing: one that incorporates the home ground from which she traveled with the new places she experienced. Color of Energy will show new works by gallery owner Mike Elsass that will be included in the Architectural Digest Home Show in New York City, which starts March 18. Elsass was selected to participate in the show through a highly competitive juried selection process. The gallery also will exhibit work by Dani Schmidt and Bob Rhoads. ReCreate, the newest addition to the Oregon Arts District, specializes paintings by Nathan DuBry, restored and vintage guitars, refurbished furniture and other instruments, and guitar and amp repairs. During First Friday, DuBry and artist Jesse Griffin will be in the store creating new paintings. During First Friday, Cachet G! will host the exhibit “Afro Centric” featuring original paintings and reproduction prints of Clifford Darrett’s work, which reflects the influence of rhythm, culture and dance on the African diaspora. Sandra’s Art Emporium will host a 50 percent off sale of owner Sandra Salyer-Miller’s handmade jewelry, as well as a special raffle. H. David Clay Studio will feature a variety of functional and decorative stoneware pottery, as well as raku, made by proprietor H. David Kirchner on the premises. The community arts space c{space will host a potluck dinner. The Cannery Art and Design Center will feature new artists Adam Mitchell, Clifford Darrett and Manuel D. Campos, whose work includes a variety of landscape, still-life and portrait paintings. Curtis Barnes also has returned to the Cannery and will have work on display during First Friday, and Patricia Berg will perform live jazz. In March, work by Christy Jennnewein and John Landsiedel is 25 percent off. K12 Gallery for Young People will present an opening reception for the artwork of local painter Rebecca Sexton, who will be on hand to talk about her work, in the high school studio. Artwork by students at St. Luke Elementary in Beavercreek will be on display in K12’s elementary studio. In addition, all the restaurants, retail shops, bars and clubs, Neon Movies, Wiley’s Comedy Club, Urban Krag Climbing Center, and other establishments throughout downtown will be open.
