Aims and content of course:
The course aims at enhancing students’ communicative competence in order to help them
become competent in English and sucessfully pass parts 1.2 and 2 of their comprehensive
exam (see below) at the end of the first year of their study programme. The focus is on the
following: advanced vocabulary building, grammar review, reading skills, writing and
speaking. In order to achive these aims, students will be given opportunities to engage in tasks
and discuss topics similar to those of the comprehensive exam. During the semester, the
course focuses on the topics given in the exam description.

You will be assessed on your oral and written contributions, oral presentation, feedback,
reflections on readings and listening materials as well as in-class test results.

1st year comprehensive language exam:
1 Written examination
1.1 Use of English (90 mins)
task types: context vocabulary, cloze, error correction, sentence transformation, word
forms, multiple choice, reading comprehension (multiple choice)
1.2 Writing task (formal & informal letter, narrative, review)
2 Oral examination – taken in pairs
Task types: (a) 1 minute talk about a topic prompted by pictures – other student
comments on talk
(topics: Vocab. section of ALP)
(b) reading a short article and summarising it
(c) communication activity – two-way conversation with another
student – decision-making based on visual and witten prompts
