FACULTY DEVELOPMENT GRANTS - Fall 2005
The Faculty Development Policies & Activities Committee, based on the
recommendation from the sub-committee on faculty development grants
(Robertson, Davis, Anderson), has approved faculty development grants for Fall
2005 to 35 faculty, for a total allocation of $50,526.52 .
The grants will go to fund a variety of professional development initiatives by
faculty at Hawai’i Pacific University and reflect the steady growth in scholarship
activities among HPU faculty. They include conference presentations throughout
the country and as far away as Australia, China, Ghana, Nigeria, South Korea,
Taiwan, and Vietnam.
Grant recipients for Fall 2005 include:
Jerome Agrusa, Professor of Travel Industry Management, is awarded for
presenting his paper titled, ‘Sustainable Tourism that Works, Using the BottomUp Approach’ and for his participation as executive officer at the 12th Asia Pacific
Tourism Association Annual Conference in Hualien, Taiwan, June 2006.
Stephen Allen, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, is awarded for presenting his
paper ‘Production of Microcrystalline Cellulose from Sugar-Cane Bagasse’ at the
International Chemical Congress PACIFICHEM 2005 Conference in Honolulu,
Hawaii, December 2005.
Margaret Anderson, Associate Professor of Nursing, is awarded for her
participation at the Psychiatric Nursing 20th Anniversary Conference in Seattle,
Washington, May 2005 and at the National League of Nursing Education Summit
2005 in Baltimore, Maryland, September 2005.
Robert Borofsky, Professor of Anthropology, is awarded for presenting his
paper ‘Placing Ethics at the Discipline’s Center: Bringing Past Hopes into Future
Realities’ at the American Anthropological Association 104th Annual Meeting in
Washington, D.C., November 2005.
Patricia Burrell, Associate Professor of Nursing, is awarded for presenting her
paper ‘The Dutiful Daughter: Aspects of the evolving feminine’ at the 2nd Annual
International Academic Conference of Analytical Psychology and Jungian
Studies in College Station, Texas, July 2005 and for presenting her paper
‘Forensic Nursing: A Paradigm Shift in the Essentials of Nursing Education,
Practice, Administration, and Research’ at the 17th Meeting of the International
Association of Forensic Sciences in Hong Kong, China, August 2005.
Kathleen Cassity, Assistant Professor of English, is awarded for presenting her
paper ‘When the Middle is a Chasm: Where Can We Meet?: Negotiating Across
Ideological Divides in the Composition Classroom’ at the 57th Annual Conference
on College Composition and Communication in Chicago, Illinois, March 2006.
Grace Cheng, Assistant Professor of Political Science, is awarded for presenting
her paper ‘Comparing Vietnam and China: Party Ideologies and Rural
Development Experiences’ at the Second International Conference on
Environmental, Cultural, Economic and Social Sustainability in Hanoi, Vietnam,
January 2006.
Michael Dabney, Instructor of Biology, is awarded for his participation at the 30 th
Annual Conference of the Professional and Organizational Development Network
in Higher Education in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, October 2005.
Jon Davidann, Associate Professor of History, is awarded for his participation at
the 120th Annual Meeting of the American Historical Association in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, January 2006.
ReNel Davis, Associate Professor of Nursing, is awarded for her participation at
the International Council of Nursing 23rd Quadrennial congress 2005 in Taipei,
Taiwan, May 2005.
Daniel Gefroh, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, is awarded for presenting
his paper ‘Sufficient Conditions for Hurwitz Stability of Complex Polynomials’ at

Allison Gough, Assistant Professor of History, is awarded for her participation at

Teresa Lane, Assistant Professor of Spanish and TESL, is awarded for her
participation at the American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages 39th
Annual Meeting and Exposition in Baltimore, Maryland, November 2005.
Linda Lierheimer, Associate Professor of History and Humanities, is awarded
