The Colosseum of Ancient Rome The arena floor – under the floor of the Colosseum, there were cells for the gladiators, criminals, and wild animals. First seating tier – The colosseum stood 160 feet high with four levels. three of the levels had seats, the fourth was for standing room only, and spectators were seated purely according to social class. The court and distinguished visitors sat on the first tier, where the emperor and his family had their own box. Second seating tier – the second tier consisted of rows of marble seats that were reserved for traders and businessmen. Third seating tier – this area of seating was for women only. entrances – in total, the Colosseum could hold as many as 50,000 spectators at a time. They entered through the eighty entrances at ground level. Doorways – Here you can see the doorways leading out to the rows of seats. Arches and columns – The first three levels of the Colosseum each had eighty arches, some of which were numbered for ease of seating people. A mass of columns supported the levels: Doric columns for the first, ionic for the second, and on the third level, Corinthian. The top level had Corinthian pilasters – shallow rectangular columns. Roof – The Colosseum had no roof. instead, masts anchored ropes supporting a huge awning that was raised to protect the crowds against the blazing summer sun.
