BSc (Hons) Professional Practice
Sexual and Reproductive Health Pathway
The following modules will be available as a level 3 pathway within the BSc
(Hons) Professional Practice Programme:
Contraception, Sexual and Reproductive Health: 30 credits.
This module will enable practitioners to become professionally and clinically
competent and confident to meet the contraceptive, sexual and reproductive
health needs of all individuals accessing a variety of health and non health
car settings.
The module will enable practitioners to analyse and evaluate current drivers,
care and organisation of services in order to actively promote contraception,
sexual and reproductive health.
Practitioners will be required to undertake an unseen examination and
submit a negotiated case scenario. Assessment of clinical competencies will
take place in contraceptive, sexual health clinics, via Objective Structured
Clinical Examination (OSCE) and a Learning Log.
The Practice of Sexual Health: 30 credits.
This module will enable practitioners to become professionally and clinically
competent and confident to assess, screen and where appropriate manage
individuals of Sexually Transmitted Infections.
The module will enable practitioners to analyse and evaluate the drivers for
sexual health promotion and become actively engaged with the provision of
services to promote sexual health.
Practitioners will be required to submit a critique of service provision
Assessment of clinical competencies will take place in Genito-Urinary
Medicine clinics, via Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and
a Learning Log.
Young People’s Sexual and Reproductive Health: 15 credits
This module will enable practitioners to gain a deeper understanding of
young people and their sexual and reproductive health care needs.
The module will enable practitioners to explore ways of actively promoting
young people’s sexual and reproductive health.
Practitioners will be expected to identify a specific area of sexual and
reproductive health and devise a strategy that may be utilised by health
professionals to deliver a service to young people.
Contemporary Issues in Sexual and Reproductive Health: 15 credits.
Men and women of all ages seek or need help from the sexual health
services, increasingly the very young and much older client. Many families
live in poverty with limited resources. Demographic changes in the
population have a major impact on service provision and use. The
government is asking NHS service providers to focus their efforts on
vulnerable groups. These groups are at the forefront of need in the sexual
health services, often hard to reach, often left out.
This module will enable practitioners to be informed about current issues
and to debate them in the relative safety of the classroom.
Practitioners will be expected to critically evaluate the provision of sexual
health services to vulnerable and hard to reach groups.
Students will be able to exit the programme on successful completion
of 60 credits within the pathway students, with a Graduate Certificate in
Sexual and Reproductive Health.
Practitioners may choose to do the two 30 credit modules or one 30
credit and two 15 credit modules. This will encourage flexibility
according to career focus and progression.
To obtain a BSc (Hons) Professional Practice; Sexual and Reproductive
Health (120 credits at level 3) practitioners must also complete the following
core generic modules:
Research in Clinical Practice: 15 credits
Leading and Managing Clinical Change: 15 credits.
Dissertation (Change Proposal): 30 credits
